On consecutive evenings earlier this month, the filly Mitey Like a Rose and gelding San Lorenzo Ivory were clear winners of time trials for the $973,665 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity for Quarter Horses. Mitey Like a Rose won a division of the 330-yard trials by 1 3/4 lengths in 16.89 seconds, the fastest time of 11 trials on April 1. The next night, San Lorenzo Ivory won by two lengths in 16.68. In Saturday’s final, Mitey Like a Rose and San Lorenzo Ivory will start from posts 8 and 10 in a field of 10, meaning most race watchers will be focused on the outside part of the gate at the start. For trainer Santos Carrizales Jr., who will saddle San Lorenzo Ivory, the entire gate will be scrutinized. Carrizales has three other qualifiers, including Eye on the Card, who won his trial by two lengths on April 1 in 16.96 and starts from the inside. San Lorenzo Ivory, who races for Rogelio Marquez Jr. of Rosenberg, Texas, is expected to be favored. The gelding, purchased for $52,000 at the Heritage Place yearling sale last September, will be ridden by Juan Pulido, who was aboard all four of the Carrizales-trained qualifiers. :: Serious horseplayers use serious products. Clinton Crawford was second with 13 wins from 96 runners. In the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity, Crawford starts the capable gelding Kiss of Valor, who won his debut in a trial race on April 2 in 16.90. Remington Park has a 12-race program on Saturday that begins at 7 p.m. Eastern. Betting is available through DRFBets.com. There are seven stakes on the program, including the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile, the consolation for the futurity. The late double consists of the $270,535 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby and the futurity. Political Speed is the fastest qualifier for the 400-yard derby after winning a division of the trials on April 3 in 19.86 for Jason Olmstead, the Quarter Horse champion trainer of 2021. Political Speed is perfect in two starts this year, having won a 350-yard allowance race March 10. Last November, Political Speed was sixth in the $220,524 Black Gold Laddie Futurity for colts and geldings at Will Rogers Downs in Oklahoma, the gelding’s only loss in his last six starts. Political Speed, who races for Tom Maher and Kim Paulsen, has won 5 of 8 starts. In the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby, Political Speed faces three rivals who won futurities in 2021 – Docs Dusty Cartel, EM High Country, and San Lorenzo Tay. San Lorenzo Tay won the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity, but later tested positive for clenbuterol, a case that is still subject to legal proceedings.
