While Kentucky dominates the nation by stallion population and activity – according to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred, 196 stallions in the state covered 61.4 percent of mares in 2022 – Daily Racing Form statistics showed stallion activity in 39 other states. The leading sires by earnings in their respective jurisdictions, alphabetically by state, were: ◗ Alabama: Doc N Bubba G (Cross Creek Outfitters) topped four stallions in the state. ◗ Arizona: Lotsa Mischief (Fleming Thoroughbred Farm), by Into Mischief, led the way with solid earnings of $869,361. ◗ Arkansas: Grade 1 winner The Big Beast (McDowell Farm) led a stallion roster that has been growing in recent years. Join today.  ◗ California: Dual classic winner I’ll Have Another (Ocean Breeze Ranch), who had his first California-sired juveniles in 2022, earned $6,600,317, compared to $5,038,806 for Stay Thirsty (Lovacres Ranch), represented by two California-sired crops. The majority of I’ll Have Another’s earnings came from runners banking high purses in Japan, where he stood the first years of his career. ◗ Colorado: Save Big Money (Winner Maker Farms) was represented by runners who earned $249,258. ◗ Florida: Khozan (Journeyman Stallions) banked $4,594,461 to lead by a healthy margin over Brethren (Arindel Farm) at $3,161,254. Both are well-bred sons of Distorted Humor. ◗ Georgia: Prospector Street (H.H. Horses) is the only stallion in the state; his only runner on the year was a winner. ◗ Idaho: Boos (Treasure Ranch) led four in the state. ◗ Illinois: Perennial leader Ghaaleb (Wildwood Farm) banked $1,382,315 and was the only stallion in the state to crack seven figures in progeny earnings. ◗ Indiana: In one of the closer in-state races, Harry’s Holiday (Breakway Farm) edged Unbridled Express (Swifty Farms), with earnings of $1,034,401 to $1,032,814. ◗ Iowa: The Iowa State University breeding program continues to dominate the state, as Anchor Down’s progeny earned $1,549,909 to best stablemate Stroll at $1,023,780. ◗ Kansas: Prospector’s Treat was the only stallion active in the state for 2022. ◗ Louisiana: Grade 1 winners Carpe Diem (Lacer at Aztec Equine) and Exaggerator (Elite Thoroughbreds) were both significant additions from Kentucky to Louisiana for 2022. Their Kentucky-sired progeny placed them atop the earnings for all stallions in the state, with bankrolls of $6,229,757 and $5,939,349, respectively. ◗ Maryland: Perennial state leader Great Notion (Northview Stallion Station) again topped the roster for a powerful farm, as his progeny earned $4,615,322 in 2022. ◗ Massachussetts: De Roode (Salim Stable) led six stallions in the Bay State. ◗ Michigan: Unbridled Energy (Hubel Farm) continues to lead in his adopted home state. ◗ Minnesota: Grade 1 winner Kela (Stillwater Equine) has found a home as the leading sire in this state. ◗ Mississippi: Nonno’s Boy (LTC Thoroughbreds) was the only stallion with activity in this state for 2022, with one runner who went winless. ◗ Montana: Ashkal (Kortum Ranch) and Double Dewars (Dean Murphy Ranch) were the only two stallions in the state, in that order by earnings; neither had a winner. ◗ Nebraska: Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Court Vision (Pryor Ranch), who moved to the state for the 2021 season, smashed the stallion list in 2022, with progeny earnings of $2,158,636 far outclassing his closest pursuer at $415,528. ◗ New Jersey: In another remarkably close state earnings race, Hey Chub (Joe-Dan Farm) edged Il Postino (Colonial Farms), $445,282 to $444,361. ◗ New Mexico: The late Attila’s Storm (Double LL Farms), with a bankroll of $2,672,381, easily led a sizeable stallion roster in the state. ◗ New York: Rising star Central Banker (McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds) continues to stand out, as his progeny earned $5,391,160, easily surpassing runner-up War Dancer (Irish Hill and Dutchess Views) with $2,873,810. Central Banker also tied with California resident Grazen on the Beyer Sire Performance Standings as the U.S. stallions outside of Kentucky with the most individual runners to earn 90-plus Beyers, with nine each. ◗ North Carolina: Chelsey Cat (Rock House Farm) had one winner. ◗ North Dakota: Rock the Rock (L.J. Harsche) led the nine stallions in the state, with progeny earnings more than double his closest challenger. ◗ Ohio: Dominus (Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm) moved from Kentucky to Ohio for 2022, and his incoming progeny earnings of $3,569,137 made him an immediate standout. ◗ Oklahoma: Multiple Grade 1 winner Flat Out (Mighty Acres), whose first Oklahoma-sired foals will race next year, earned $5,872,885 to dominate the list; stablemate Liaison, whose first Oklahoma-sired juveniles raced in 2022, was next at $1,637,047. ◗ Oregon: The late Harbor the Gold (Bar C Racing) earned $1,103,301 with 32 winners, leading both categories by far. ◗ Pennsylvania: Wicked Strong (Pin Oak Lane Farm) earned $3,593,568 to edge the state’s late perennial leading sire Jump Start (Northview Pennsylvania). ◗ South Carolina: Done Talking (Elloree Training Center) led four stallions in the state, three of whom stand at Elloree. ◗ South Dakota: Seeking Beauty (Horse Creek Thoroughbreds), with one winner, led the three in the state. ◗ Tenessee: Hacker (Whispering Hill Farm) topped R H F Harlequin (Reed Hill Farm); neither had a winner. ◗ Texas: The Lone Star State has several newcomers in recent years, and Grade 1-winning juvenile Competitive Edge (Valor Farm) tops a quartet of stallions with seven-figure progeny bankrolls at $3,162,435. ◗ Utah: Northern Soldier (Tip Ranch) and Afrashad (Gibbs Racing) each had one winner to finish in that order by earnings. ◗ Virginia: Hello Broadway (Wind N’ Springs Farm), new to the state from West Virginia, led 13 stallions in a marketplace showing some resurgence with the success of Colonial Downs. ◗ Washington: Conveyance (Blue Ribbon Farm) was the only stallion in the state to crack seven figures. ◗ West Virginia: Fiber Sonde (Beau Ridge Farm) continues his dominance of the local market, claiming another leading sire title with a healthy bankroll of $2,817,183. ◗ Wisconsin: Gazebo (Walsh Livestock Farm) and Be Valiant (Tipperary Stables) each had one winner. ◗ Wyoming: Neither Trojan Nation (Golden Creek Equine) nor stablemare Bushwacker recorded a winner. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
