HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Law Professor will make his first start for new connections on Sunday when he meets fellow Grade 2-winning millionaire Silver Prospector in the $200,000 Lake Ouachita at Oaklawn Park. The 1 1/16-mile race for 4-year-olds and up closes out the meet. It’s part of an 11-race card capped by the $125,000 Trail’s End, a tradition-rich starter allowance at 1 3/4 miles. The Lake Ouachita field of eight includes defending winner Ain’t Life Grand, wire-to-wire threat Frosted Departure, and four-time stakes winner Strong Tide. Law Professor was a $230,000 purchase during a Fasig-Tipton digital sale March 24. John Holleman purchased the 6-year-old, who was based in New York, and sent him to Arkansas under the care of trainer Wade Rarick. He’s doing really good here. He’s a pretty straightforward horse.” Rarick said he’s had a chance to talk to Law Professor’s former trainer Rob Atras, who brought the horse to Oaklawn last year and saddled him to a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap. “Robby kind of gave me the rundown on him and said he kind of lost his race in the [indoor] paddock here,” Rarick said. “He just gets nervous. We’ll saddle [outside] in the winner’s circle. “They take them out in the infield and circle them [in stakes], and I questioned if that would be a concern, and he said no. Once he’s out of that arena form of paddock, where everything is above them and stuff, he should be fine. I feel good about everything.” Law Professor will break from the rail under the meet’s leading rider, Cristian Torres. “Drawing the rail, I don’t think it’s ideal,” Rarick said. “But I think he’ll be fine. Torres is on him. He’s such a good rider. I think he’ll put him in the right position and get the trip. “There’s a little bit of speed in there. I don’t think there’s a ton of speed. I kind of see Torres pushing away from there and laying close.” Silver Prospector could also be close to the pace after attending quick fractions and finishing second last out in the Grade 3 Oaklawn Mile. He’s back racing at the distance over which he is a multiple graded stakes winner. Silver Prospector, who has earned $1.5 million, has banked $918,749 of that amount at Oaklawn. Keith Asmussen has the mount from post 5 for Ed and Susie Orr and trainer Steve Asmussen. Frosted Departure wired a field of allowance rivals at 1 1/16 miles last out at Keeneland. Earlier in the Oaklawn meet, he did the same. Julien Leparoux was aboard for both wins and is in for the mount Sunday for RT Racing Stable and trainer Kenny McPeek. Ain’t Life Grand adds a set of blinkers Sunday. Alexander Helios, a half-brother to Preakness winner Rombauer, makes his stakes debut. The field also includes Nautical Star, who was third in the Oaklawn Mile, and Ben Franklin, a two-time winner this meet at Oaklawn. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
