HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Under most circumstances, it would seem logical that a horse coming off a stakes placing and moving into allowance company would be taking a drop in class. But that’s not how trainer Jorge Delgado sees it with Launch, runner-up in the Glitter Woman Stakes here last month, whom he sends out against five rivals, including the very impressive maiden winner Roswell, going 6 1/2 furlongs Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. Launch was winless in seven starts but Group 3-placed in Ireland before joining Delgado’s barn last fall. She won her maiden in one-sided fashion by 7 1/4 lengths in her U.S. debut on Oct. 18 at Delaware Park. She did not start again until a week after turning 3 in the six-furlong Glitter Woman, finishing second best to the heavily favored and still undefeated Into Champagne. “I know that was a very good filly that beat her last time in the stakes, but I think this field on Wednesday is even better than the stakes,” Delgado said. “She’s been training very well since that race, and I’m hoping we can catch the lead without too much pressure, or at least be close, because that’s her style.” Delgado’s chief concern is breaking from post 2, rather than the increase in distance to 6 1/2 furlongs for the first time. “I think 6 1/2 is a good distance for her, I feel very comfortable with that, even seven furlongs and maybe up to a mile will be good for her too,” Delgado said. “But breaking inside, she’s got to break clean and get position, because there is some other speed to her outside.” :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Delgado said the Any Limit Stakes on March 17 is his prime goal for Launch at the present time. Roswell will look to build on her big effort at first asking here four weeks earlier when rallying from just off the pace to a 1 1/2-length maiden win for which she earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure. Roswell, by Into Mischief out of the Grade 1-winning mare Acoma, is trained by Bill Mott for her breeder, Helen Alexander. She will break on the outside, in post 6, under Junior Alvarado, who also was aboard in her debut. Caitlinhergrtness, like Launch, returns to allowance company after finishing fourth in the one-mile Tempted in her 2-year-old finale on Nov. 5 at Aqueduct. She ultimately succumbed to an extended pace duel in that race as the 8-5 favorite. Caitlinhergrtness, a daughter of Omaha Beach trained by Todd Pletcher, won her maiden going a mile at Aqueduct five weeks earlier while registering a 73 Beyer, which is second best in this field behind only Roswell. Last-out maiden winners Flower Mound and New Diamond complete the compact lineup along with Tampa Bay Downs invader Runaway Diva. Spirit Wind now with Joseph After winning multiple stakes with trainer Ralph Nicks and a graded stakes for Carlos David, the speedy and talented Spirit Wind has switched barns once again. She has joined the stable of leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after being purchased privately from her former owner and breeder, Jacks or Better Farm, by Miller Racing following her half-length, wire-to-wire win in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl here Dec. 23. Joseph said Spirit Wind came into his barn about three weeks ago and had her first work since the Sugar Swirl, an easy three-eighths in 36.18 seconds, here Sunday. “My owner is always looking for fillies who are proven and when he heard [Spirit Wind] was on the market, he went out and made the deal,” Joseph said. Ironically, it was Joseph’s filly Intrepid Daydream that Spirit Wind beat in the Sugar Swirl. “Today’s work was just to see where we were at with her,” Joseph said Sunday. “This is the first time I’ve really seen her work and obviously, she moves super. We’ll look at all the big sprints coming up for fillies and mares with the one here in March, the Hurricane Bertie, likely the next option.” The Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie will be run at 6 1/2 furlongs on March 9. :: Bet with the Best! Intrepid Daydream, who looked razor sharp zipping four furlongs in 47.48 under jockey Edgard Zayas here Sunday, is entered along with stablemate Bluefeld in Saturday’s Grade 3 Barbara Fritchie at Laurel Park. “We’re sending her up north to race next because I really think the cooler weather will help her,” Joseph said. Senor Buscador works Senor Buscador was back on the work tab for the first time since his second-place finish to favored National Treasure in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational when breezing an easy half-mile in 50.11 seconds before galloping out with good energy under regular rider Junior Alvarado here Sunday. Senor Buscador is scheduled to depart South Florida later this week to compete in the $20 million Saudi Cup, where he will get another run at National Treasure on Feb. 24. Alvarado, who rode Senor Buscador for the first time when second best in the Grade 2 Cigar Mile and again in the Pegasus, was beaming with confidence a short while after the work. “Beautiful work, we were looking to just stretch his legs, keep him happy, keep him comfortable, and let him gallop out on his own, and I really couldn’t be any happier with the way he did it,” Alvarado said. “I was just enjoying the ride. I don’t like to use the words 'better than before' because he ran a hell of a race last time, but he’s doing well and in great shape, just as he was before that race. “This is my first time going to Saudi for this race, I couldn’t be more excited, and to be honest I wouldn’t change any horse for this one that I’m riding.” Lopez has two Derby hopefuls Within one week’s time, jockey Paco Lopez suddenly finds himself with not one but two Derby hopefuls on his hands after piloting No More Time to a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday’s Grade 3 Sam F. Davis for trainer Jose D’Angelo. Seven days earlier, Lopez guided Hades to a very game, impressive, and somewhat shocking triumph here in the Grade 3 Holy Bull. The lightly raced Hades repulsed an extended challenge from reigning juvenile champion Fierceness before galloping out with a ton of energy after the race. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2024: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more “No More Time ran very well. He was very comfortable on the lead, was waiting for the other horses a little bit in the stretch, then finished strong and galloped out extremely well – just like Hades the week before,” said Lopez, who is clearly second best in the jockey standings here behind only perennial leader Irad Ortiz Jr. Lopez is hopeful No More Time and Hades will stay on separate paths moving forward on the Derby trail. “Hopefully, one will go to the Tampa Bay Derby, the other to the Florida Derby,” Lopez said. “Anything can happen with a 3-year-old, things can change so quickly, so it never hurts to have more than one, although right now both of them are looking very good and act like they should both move forward in their next starts.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
