Lake Bee became a stakes winner in his first attempt Tuesday, when he captured the $75,000 Welder by a half-length over Power Slam at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. It was another 2 3/4 lengths back in third to Okie Smoke. The Welder was for 3-year-olds bred in Oklahoma. It is a new race, named for the retired millionaire who is in the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame at Remington Park. Welder also won multiple horse of the meet titles at his home track of Will Rogers. Lake Bee ($4) tracked the leaders through an opening quarter in 22.12 seconds, moved to the fore through a half-mile in 44.91, and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:11.26. :: Bet with the Best!
