Lady Apple helped lift Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen to one of his winningest days in racing Sunday when she captured the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks. It was the sixth of Asmussen’s seven wins on the card, tying his personal record for a single program. He first won seven races on a card on July 14, 2002, at Lone Star Park. Asmussen – whose best day is 10 victories from starters at multiple tracks – is the second all-time winningest trainer in North America with 8,601 victories through Tuesday. He trails the late Dale Baird (9,445). Asmussen’s pair of seven-win cards are records for both Remington – which had 13 races Sunday – and Lone Star, which had 14. In the Remington Oaks, Lady Apple stalked her rivals, moved to the lead after six furlongs in 1:10.57, and fought off a resurging Gold Standard to equal her best Beyer Speed Figure, an 88. It was Lady Apple’s third Grade 3 win behind the Fantasy at Oaklawn and the Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows. “Just very proud of her,” Asmussen said. “What a nice filly she is. I think she’s a very good 3-year-old that’s going to be a better older mare.” Asmussen said Tuesday that Lady Apple would be pointed to the $250,000 Zia Park Oaks on Nov. 27. The race is run at the same 1 1/16-mile distance over which she is now 4 for 4. Lady Apple, who in May was third in the Kentucky Oaks, races for Phoenix Thoroughbred III and Katierich Stables. Mt. Brave gave Asmussen his seventh win on Sunday’s card, right after the Remington Oaks. The 3-year-old filly defeated older rivals in the $50,000 Flashy Lady Stakes, and for covering six furlongs in 1:08.54 earned a career-high Beyer of 90. “Hopefully, it leads into bigger and better things,” Asmussen said. “She’s always had a lot of talent. That makes her 3 for 4. Obviously, we’re very excited going forward.” Asmussen said plans are to be determined for Mt. Brave, a daughter of Malibu Moon and the millionaire Wild Gams. Plans also are pending for Area, who took the Sunday’s $75,000 Ricks Memorial at Remington.
