NEW ORLEANS – Four-year-old Clairiere is the first foal out of the multiple Grade 1-winner Cavorting to race, and during 2021 she became a Grade 1 winner herself, and came within a length of capturing the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Three-year-old La Crete, by Medaglia d’Oro, is Clairiere’s little sister, and on Saturday at the Fair Grounds she ran her career mark to two wins from two starts, becoming a stakes-winner herself thanks to a display of heart in the $150,000 Silverbulletday.  La Crete, bet to even-money favoritism, jumped to the lead and held it around the first turn, down the backstretch, and through most of the second bend. But the more-seasoned filly Fannie and Freddie pounced on her at the five-sixteenths pole, took a lead at the quarter pole, and appeared poised to draw away to victory. Instead, under strong encouragement from Joel Rosario, La Crete fought back, getting on even terms with Fannie and Freddie with an eighth of a mile to run and pulling away to win by one length.  “There’s no substitute for pedigree,” said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. “We saw that at the eighth pole today.”  :: Want the best bonus in racing? Code: WINNING Fannie and Freddie was comfortably second, about 2 1/2 lengths in front of Bernabreezy, who made an encouraging inside move at the three-sixteenths pole before flattening out and narrowly holding off fourth-place Candy Raid. Then came longshot Miss Chamita, with 2-1 second-choice Sweet as Pie bringing up the rear in a five-horse field.  Asmussen trains La Crete ($4.20) for her breeder, Stonestreet Stables. Off splits of 24.50, 48.79, and 1:13.87, La Crete was timed in 1:43.93 for one mile, 70 yards on turf.   La Crete debuted with an easy front-running win Nov. 20 in a Churchill Downs maiden race. Her competition seemed suspect and her raw time and speed figures were modest, but La Crete took a forward step in her stakes debut.  “We knew she’d stay – that’s why we ran her long first time out,” Blasi said. “What you need right now is for them to be moving forward, and she definitely did that today.”  Blasi said La Crete was likely to return for the Rachel Alexandra Stakes here Feb. 19.   “I thought the other horse was going to go ahead and win,” Rosario said. “This is a special filly.”  Fannie and Freddie, breaking from the rail under Colby Hernandez, was switched outside to track the leader, everything falling into place – until La Crete came back and snatched away victory.   Pass the Plate up in Krantz  A distant last the first time past the wire, Pass the Plate passed everyone to win the $100,000 Marie Krantz Memorial Stakes by a head.  Winless from eight starts in 2021, Pass the Plate launched a determined rally under Marcelino Pedroza approaching the three-furlong marker in this turf route. Swooping wide, Pass the Plate collared Lovely Ride at the sixteenth pole and just pushed past for a narrow victory.   Lovely Ride had taken the lead from pacesetting Adelaide Miss, who set splits of 23.79, 48.52, and 1:13.16 over a course rated “good.” Pass the Plate clocked 1:44.15 for 1 1/16 miles and paid $19.20 to win. Adelaide Miss held on for third as 3-2 favorite Abscond failed to muster a rally and finished sixth of seven. Catch a Bid, Touch of Class, Summer in Saratoga, Assertive Style, and Dawn’s Dancer were scratched.  Paul McGee trains Pass the Plate for her breeder, Silverton Hill. Pass the Plate is a 5-year-old mare by Temple City out of Pocket Gift, by Great Notion.  :: Want to start playing with a $510 bankroll and have access to free Formulator? Learn more
