Plate Trial Stakes July 20, Woodbine Winner: My Boy Prince Trainer: Mark Casse Jockey: Sahin Civaci Owner: Gary Barber Beyer Speed Figure: 87 My Boy Prince had to show a new dimension after rearing at the break and finding himself uncharacteristically last and then five wide down the lane before the first turn. Civaci was very patient getting him in position behind the speed down the backside and was authoritative in asking him to go after the front-runners as they turned for home. My Boy Prince showed his class and determination to hold off a fast-closing Rafaroo to notch his third straight victory, which was his toughest yet since returning home, earning his place in the King’s Plate field. Rafaroo was content to settle toward the back of the pack early. He made an eye-catching move on the turn for home and quickly gained ground on the front-runners before being swung five wide into the lane. He closed strongly while chasing the winner, who got the jump on him, and just ran out of ground. The son of Hard Spun took a huge step forward in his second lifetime start and should relish the King’s Plate distance. He still looks to have more to offer and proved that he fits with this group. Friendly Ghost broke running and found himself as the pacesetter by default once My Boy Prince blew the break. He hung on gamely while setting slow fractions in his first two-turn test and put forth a solid effort while facing tougher competition after graduating in his season opener with an off-the-pace victory. :: 2024 King's Plate: Get odds, comments, analysis, and news for the 165th running of the King's Plate at Woodbine Piper’s Factor was content to flank Friendly Ghost for the first half of the race and was in prime position to pounce after slow fractions. He was unable to kick on with the others and instead flattened out, which was similar to his effort in the Grade 3 Marine. Jokestar was unhurried after the break and raced at the back of the pack. He was closing down the stretch but was unable to make up a significant amount of ground to hit the top three. It was an educational effort for him, but not sure if it was enough of a step forward for the big day. No More Options broke on top but conceded the lead to Friendly Ghost. He rated nicely behind the front-runners and started to back up prior to the turn for home. He disappointed with his worst career effort to date and perhaps has distance limitations, even though he was third in the 1 1/8-mile Coronation Futurity last season. Beautiful Sky was the lone filly that was supplemented. She had a rail trip from start to finish but was outmatched finishing a distant last. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Woodbine Oaks July 20, Woodbine Winner: Kin’s Concerto Trainer: Josie Carroll Jockey: Sofia Vives Owner: Chiefswood Stables Ltd. Beyer Speed Figure: 80 Kin’s Concerto was given an astute ride by award-winning apprentice Sofia Vives, who placed her just behind the pacesetters saving ground with a rail-skimming ride. She guided her off the rail with enough time in the lane to give her a chance to run down the others and claim the victory. The filly by Mendelssohn has done nothing wrong in her career and peaked on the right day. Caitlinhergrtness ran a monster effort off a two-week turnaround racing close to the pace in the three path. She overtook a couple of stubborn foes fighting down the stretch and looked like she was on her way to victory only to be caught late. She is a serious contender should she line up against the boys in the King’s Plate. Hurricane Clair was positioned in midpack going into the first turn and was a little rank before settling down on the backside. She found herself on the rail behind the eventual winner and went wide down the lane for a clear path to catch them but ran out of ground on the top two. She fought bravely for the show spot. A Little Frisky was brushed at the start and found herself five wide around the early turn and was unable to tuck in to save any ground. She made a menacing move turning for home while wide again and was just unable to find more in the stretch late. It was a strong effort considering the trip. Lunch With Bernie was hustled from the break to secure her position with the front group after breaking from the outside post flanking the pacesetter. She overtook the speed before the turn for home but was unable to kick on as strongly as the others. War Painter was angled to the rail shortly after the break with position toward the back of the field. She started to make her move on the far turn and had clear sailing in the lane but was unable to muster much of a closing kick to threaten the top flight. My Girl Della raced with the top group in the three path around the first turn and then settled toward the middle while still traveling wide. She tried to make a move turning for home and tired in the stretch. Vucchella took the first turn wide after breaking with the group and was unable to find a spot to settle. She was hard-ridden into the turn and was unable to sustain any sort of run. Ba Dee Yah secured a rail position toward the rear of the field entering the first turn and was content racing at the back. She was urged strongly heading into the far turn but had no rally in the lane when just passing tiring foes. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. Her position remained unchanged at the back of the pack, and she wasn’t menacing at any point. Lookin to Conquer went straight to the lead as expected and set a fast pace that she was unable to maintain throughout, giving way to check in at the back. Inudation hopped sideways at the start, costing her position. She was racing at the rear throughout and was never a threat. Holiday in Jail went to her knees at the start and found position on the rail with the back part of the field. She held her position but was unable to kick on when asked to run around the far turn. Bravo Kate sat midpack through the first half of the race and was under a ride before the second turn with no response. She was wrapped up by jockey David Moran. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
