The favored Kathy’s Song ($5.40) notched her first stakes victory with a powerful move in the stretch to capture the $63,675 Miss America on closing day Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Under Brice Blanc, who guided Editore to a $22.60 upset victory in the Grade 3 Berkeley on Nov. 25, Kathy’s Song was content to sit well off pacesetters Alliford Bay and Ok Doll in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares that drew 14 entrants. She was ninth early and began to move up slowly down the backstretch while sitting two wide. Blanc swung her out five wide on the second turn. Kathy’s Song moved up to challenge new leader Eccentric Spinster in the lane, pulling within a head at the eighth pole, but one length behind her sat a wall of horses, including Alliford Bay, Miss Southern Miss, Lady Valeur, and Coachwhip. But Kathy’s Song, a 3-year-old daughter of Candy Ride, was in high gear and kicked clear, beating the previously undefeated Coachwhip to the wire by 3 1/4 lengths in 1:43.04. Lady Valeur, who was 3 for 3 in Northern California stakes and was the defending race champion, was third after getting into tight quarters in the lane, finishing another half-length back, with Central Heat rounding out the superfecta. Kathy’s Song had run ninth, fourth, and fifth in her first three stakes tries in Southern California but had won her previous three non-stakes outings, all on turf. Coachwhip, another 3-year-old filly, had won her first two starts, both on turf at Golden Gate Fields. Trained by Richard Baltas and owned by Abbondanza Racing LLC, Premier Racing Club, and Jerry McClanahan, Kathy’s Song earned $30,750 for her win. Her lifetime earnings are now $141,955, with four wins in 12 starts.
