Kathleen O. made a splash at one turn earlier in her career and on Saturday will put her perfect record around one bend on the line in the Grade 2, $200,000 Ruffian at Belmont Park. The Ruffian, a one-turn mile, is for fillies and mares. It’s one of three stakes on an 11-race card that includes the Grade 2, $200,000 Fort Marcy. First post is 12:20 p.m. Eastern. Kathleen O. is 3 for 3 at one turn. She last raced at the configuration in March 2022, winning the Grade 2 Davona Dale at a mile at Gulfstream Park. It was her third straight win at one turn, behind a maiden special weight at seven furlongs at Aqueduct and the Cash Run at a mile at Gulfstream. “I kind of like cutting back to one turn,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “There’ll be some speed in the race. Maybe we can finish into it.” Kathleen O. is part of a field of six that includes fellow Grade 2 winner Gerrymander, Grade 3 winner Mommasgottarun, Grade 1-placed Pass the Champagne, and recent stakes winner Idiomatic. McGaughey said Kathleen O. had been considered for Friday’s Grade 1 La Troienne at Churchill Downs, but ultimately the decision was made to remain at Belmont. “All we’ve got to do is lead her down the road,” he said. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Kathleen O. moved to two turns after the Davona Dale and won the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Following a close fifth in the Kentucky Oaks, she’s run second in a trio of two-turn stakes, her latest the Top Flight Invitational on April 2 at Aqueduct. “She came out of it really well,” McGaughey said. “I blew her out a little bit [Tuesday]. I thought she went really well. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens. Sometimes I wonder if [one turn] is what she wants. Maybe she doesn’t want to run that far. Her mother was a sprinter, had a stakes placing in a sprint race at Monmouth. Maybe she doesn’t want to run two turns. “They’ll keep you up at night, trying to figure them out.” Quaver, the dam of Kathleen O., ran second to Lady Shipman in the Crank It Up at about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in 2015 at Monmouth. Kendrick Carmouche will be aboard Kathleen O. on Saturday. Kathleen O., a daughter of Upstart who races for Winngate Farm, will break from post 5 for what will be her first start at Belmont. Gerrymander returns to Belmont, where she won the $150,000 Tempted at 2 and the Grade 2 Mother Goose at 3. Idiomatic is looking for her first dirt victory after winning her last three starts on the synthetic track at Turfway Park, including the Latonia. She is bred to excel on dirt as a daughter of Curlin and Lockdown, winner of the Busanda at Aqueduct and a full sister to Close Hatches. Gerrymander and Idiomatic both have speed and could help make for some honest fractions up front for Kathleen O. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
