HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Pegasus weekend at Gulfstream Park will always give Kent Sweezey good vibes. It was two years ago this week that Phat Man won the Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper to give Sweezey his lone graded triumph in nearly five years of training. “That’s been the highlight,” said Sweezey. This year, lacking a starter in any of the seven Saturday stakes, Sweezey and his clients are hoping to derive plenty of enjoyment from a festive weekend when represented by Kahiko, one of the top contenders in the Friday feature, the $70,000 Andromeda for fillies and mares. :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! Get free Formulator now! Kahiko, owned by the Victory Racing Partners, will have leading jockey Luis Saez aboard breaking from post 5 in a field of nine in the mile and 70-yard race over Tapeta. The Andromeda is the eighth of nine races on a Pegasus eve card starting at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. “Both this race and a split for boys were in the condition book for Friday,” said Sweezey, referring to the $70,000 Carousel Club, “and we were kind of hoping they’d hold this race over Saturday to be part of the big day, but it’s the other way around.” :: Want the best bonus in racing? Code: WINNING Kahiko, a 5-year-old by First Samurai, has won five of eight starts since Sweezey assumed her training here last spring for Victory Racing, a syndicate of some 20 to 30 racing enthusiasts, many from New York. It’s a solid record to earn her a 121-pound assignment for Friday, second-most under handicap conditions behind only Keeper of Time (124). “She’s a cool filly and she’s shown us she likes the synthetic,” said Sweezey, referring to a two-back win in her only prior Tapeta start. “It’s not necessarily the toughest spot for $70,000, and she breezed awesome the other day, so we’re looking for a good result. “The owners are pretty much a younger group. They’re going to be here in full force, hopefully on what turns out to be a really fun weekend.” Keeper of Time (post 1, Tyler Gaffalione), getting Lasix for the first time in her 11th start, exits a series of high-end turf stakes for Brendan Walsh, accounting for her likely favoritism. This marks her synthetics debut. Fringe players include Wicked Groove, Vip Nation, and Grand Ave Girl, all with at least one prior win over Tapeta. The Andromeda is part of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 (races 4-9), which is expected to offer a gross pool guarantee of about $600,000, assuming the jackpot was not swept Wednesday or Thursday. The Rainbow was last emptied Jan. 13. Cloudy skies and mid-70s highs are in the Friday forecast. A high of just 66 is in the forecast for Pegasus Day.
