No matter the surface, it was no problem for Just Might, who on Saturday at Churchill Downs won his second straight $145,700 Mighty Beau Overnight Stakes, a sprint that was taken off the turf, with a wire-to-wire performance. Churchill Downs announced Saturday morning that it was suspending all turf racing on the new turf course that debuted in late April, effective immediately, to allow the roots more time to establish themselves.  The Mighty Beau scratched down to a field of six, with Carotari and Smokin' Jay, one-two in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint three weeks ago at Pimlico, among the three withdrawals from the original field for the turf. But the change in surface posed no problem for Just Might ($2.80), sent away as the favorite based on his versatility. The gelding won seven stakes last year, more than any other horse in North America, for Churchill Downs-based trainer Michelle Lovell. Four of those wins came on the dirt, including the Louisville Thoroughbred Society beneath the twin spires. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! "When the race got taken off the turf this morning I wasn’t concerned because of his previous dirt form," Lovell said. "I think he can run on either surface.” Just Might broke from post 2, a solid spot to flash his early speed. With Carotari, who likely would have challenged him on the front end, not in the mix, he rattled off splits of 22.02 and 44.43 under Rafael Bejarano. He easily shook off the gamely pursuing Charcoal, who did draw to within a head on the turn, and powered clear down the stretch to win by two lengths, finishing the five furlongs in 56.74 seconds. “He handed things well today on the dirt,” Bejarano said. “He’s fast and showed that speed out of the gate like he typically does. He handled the pressure well around the turn and was strong going to the wire.” Just Might has now won nine stakes overall and pushed his earnings just shy of millionaire status, to $958,100. Charcoal easily held second, 1 3/4 lengths clear ahead of Baytown Bear. Johnny Unleashed, Oceanic, and Major Wager completed the order of finish.
