BALTIMORE – When Juliet Foxtrot won her first three starts in America after going 1 for 8 in the United Kingdom, trainer Brad Cox couldn’t help but think the Juddmonte Farms homebred had the potential to become a major player in the filly-mare turf division. Cox has given Juliet Foxtrot every chance to do just that, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Even though the 5-year-old mare has earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure or better in three of her last six starts, she’s gone winless during that span while competing mostly in major divisional events. “She’s run against some really good horses,” Cox said this week by phone from Kentucky. “I’m not saying that won’t be the case Saturday – but maybe we’ll be getting a little class relief, hopefully, by sending her there to Pimlico instead of trying her in something like the First Lady,” a Grade 1 being run Saturday at Keeneland. :: Preakness 2020: Contenders, news, past performances, and more Juliet Foxtrot, with Florent Geroux riding from post 1, is clearly the horse to beat Saturday in the Grade 3, $150,000 Gallorette early on the Preakness undercard. The 1 1/16-mile turf race drew seven other fillies and mares, although one of those, Wicked Awesome, most likely will scratch as a main track-only designate. Juliet Foxtrot was one of eight horses sent here this week by Cox from his Churchill Downs base in the care of his son and assistant, Blake. Beaten a nose in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee in August 2019, she then was defeated in her last two starts at 4 before returning to action in late May at Churchill to finish sixth as the favorite in the Grade 3 Mint Julep. Cox said a third-place finish behind Rushing Fall and Jolie Olimpica in her next start, the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland, “was a fantastic race,” but he conceded to being a bit disappointed when she faded to fourth in the Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile on the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby undercard after a promising early trip. “She just didn’t fire,” he said. “But she’s come back to do really well out of that race and we’re thinking she’s really going to bring her ‘A’ game and step up Saturday.” :: Get DRF Betting Strategies for Pimlico’s Preakness Day card A couple other Kentucky shippers, She’sonthewarpath (post 3, Gabriel Saez) and Storm the Hill (post 6, Horacio Karamanos) figure as the top threats to Juliet Foxtrot. She’sonthewarpath has won three ungraded turf stakes this year for trainer Steve Margolis, while Storm the Hill, a former West Coast stalwart, will be making her first start in nearly nine months after being turned over to Mike Maker. A pair of 4-year-old fillies based at the Fair Hill training center, No Mo Lady (post 4, Julian Pimentel) and Varenka (post 8, Trevor McCarthy) are the top local hopes. This is the 69th running of the Gallorette, which is named for the champion Maryland-bred who was foaled in 1942 and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. It goes as the second of 12 races at 11:35 a.m. Eastern.
