Johannes is a four-time stakes winner in one-mile turf races, the latest success occurring in Monday’s Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita. His career will change slightly this summer. On July 28, there is a high likelihood Johannes will start for the first time at 1 1/8 miles on turf in the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes, a $250,000 race at Del Mar. “It should be within his wheelhouse,” trainer Tim Yakteen said of the distance. “Until you try it, you don’t know.” A second option this summer is the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile, a $300,000 turf race on Aug. 31. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Johannes closed from fifth to win the Shoemaker Mile by a half-length over a stubborn Funtastic Again, who disputed the pace and led in early stretch. Johannes trailed by five lengths on the backstretch, and reached contention on the turn under jockey Umberto Rispoli. Johannes has won 5 of 9 starts and earned $423,859 for owners Joe and Debbie McCloskey, who race as Cuyathy LLC. Johannes is out of the Congrats mare Cuyathy. “We’re thrilled with his effort and performance,” Yakteen said of Johannes. “He’s just a handy horse. He’s so versatile. You can do what you want to do with him. “Umberto can place him wherever he wants. That makes him the horse that is.” Johannes paid $6.40 as the second choice. Du Jour, the 2-1 favorite, closed from 10th of 11 with a wide rally to finish third by 1 3/4 lengths. Trained by Bob Baffert, Du Jour won the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in March. “With turf racing, you have to get the right trip,” Baffert reflected on Wednesday. “He fell back and had to swing wide. It was disappointing.  He ran well. Unfortunately. When he falls back early, it’s too much do to.” Johannes, who is by Nyquist, has a 3-year-old half-sister by Mastery named Sea Dancer, who is scheduled to have her graded stakes debut in Saturday’s Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes for fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita. Sea Dancer, also owned by the McCloskeys, has won 2 of 8 starts and earned $136,595. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
