Jockey Joree Scriver, who suffered lower-limb paralysis in a one-horse accident on Jan. 1 at Sunland Park in New Mexico, was transferred from a hospital in El Paso, Texas, to the Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., a premier rehabilitation center for paralysis patients, her sister said Sunday. Scriver, 21, is scheduled to remain at Craig for 60 days, according to her sister, Nicole West. “She hasn’t had any feeling or motion in her legs,” West said. “She remains paralyzed right now.” West said doctors have advised Scriver that she has “zero percent” of recovering feeling in her legs. “It’s not impossible. Miracles happen,” West said. Scriver was injured when her mount, No Huddle, fell on the backstretch of a $5,000 claimer at six furlongs. Scriver underwent two surgeries in the days after the accident in which she sustained multiple vertebra fractures. A native of Washington state, Scriver won a career-best 82 races in 2021 and had mounts that earned a career-best $1,848,642 in 2022. Scriver began riding in 2019 and won 184 races in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. Scriver finished second in the jockey standings at the Downs at Albuquerque meeting in late fall last year, and finished fourth in the standings at Zia Park in the fall. West said Scriver’s mother accompanied her on the journey from El Paso to the Denver area hospital. “She has bad days, but most of the time she’s been in good spirits,” West said.
