Jockey Mike Luzzi, a mainstay on the New York Racing Association circuit for more than two decades, will be moving his tack to Oaklawn Park this winter and start riding there when that meet opens on Jan. 12. Luzzi, 48, was listed to ride one horse at Aqueduct on Thursday, but has already taken off that mount as he plans to start the drive from Long Island to Oaklawn that day and begin getting on horses over the weekend. Luzzi, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice of 1989, said a lack of business in New York combined with the fact his kids are older led him to the decision to try something new. Lane Luzzi, Mike’s son, will be riding at Sam Houston this winter. Mike Luzzi has a daughter who is a senior in high school. Luzzi is winless with 29 mounts at Aqueduct and won just two races from 31 mounts at Belmont Park during that track’s fall meet. “It’s been a little bit of a struggle, a little disappointing,” Luzzi said Tuesday. “The writing’s on the wall for Aqueduct – the fields are short and if you’re not riding for certain barns it’s pretty difficult.” Luzzi, who will be represented by agent Gene Short, added that a change of scenery “has been in the works for a little while. I’ve been wanting to try something different, the timing was never right.” Luzzi has 3,482 career victories with one of his biggest being the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn aboard Spun Sugar in 2006. In 2014, Luzzi suffered a broken leg and fractured pelvis when he was kicked by a horse in the paddock at Saratoga, injuries that kept him out 10 months. “I’ve seen my peers go through it – [Richard] Migliore, [Edgar] Prado, even Mike Smith had to try something different,” Luzzi said. In 2015, Luzzi was voted the recipient of the George Woolf Award, recognizing those riders who demonstrate high standards of personal and professional conduct on and off the track.
