DEL MAR, Calif. – Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux on Sunday was suspended 60 days by Del Mar’s stewards for an incident at an RV park here last fall, and he will have conditions placed on him to resume riding, but the ruling paves the way for Desormeaux to compete anew after a tumultuous past year. Desormeaux, 52, has not ridden since Jan. 23 at Santa Anita. He was arrested in Louisiana on Jan. 28 on charges of domestic abuse battery/strangulation. He subsequently failed to meet with stewards at Santa Anita on March 3 regarding the Del Mar RV park incident, and a suspension was issued the following day. Desormeaux finally met with Del Mar’s stewards – Grant Baker, Luis Jauregui, and Kim Sawyer - on July 29 to address both the incident at the RV park, which was alleged to have been related to alcohol abuse, and his failure to appear on March 3. The ruling issued on Sunday covered those incidents. The ruling bars Desormeaux from any California Horse Racing Board premises through Oct. 6, a declaration that is reciprocated nationwide. When Desormeaux is eligible to return Santa Anita will be running on the Southern California circuit, and Desormeaux is still barred from all 1/ST Racing tracks owing to a company edict following his domestic-violence arrest. So, he would need relief there to ride at Santa Anita. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! The ruling requires Desormeaux to sign a testing agreement with the CHRB, and he must be evaluated by the Winners Foundation – which assists racetrack personnel with substance-abuse issues – and abide by that organization’s recommendations. “Failure to do so may result in a suspension of his license,” the ruling states. Desormeaux was put under purview of the Winners Foundation following an earlier incident in Del Mar’s RV park in summer 2020, when he used a racial pejorative toward a Black cameraman. At that time, Desormeaux was immediately removed from Del Mar by track officials, and the stewards later suspended him for 15 days for aggressive behavior and disorderly conduct. Desormeaux has won 6,116 races in North America during his career, including three victories in the Kentucky Derby, three in the Preakness, one Belmont, and six in Breeders’ Cup races. He is a three-time Eclipse Award winner. Desormeaux won 29 races from 210 mounts in 2020, was 53 for 353 during a resurgent 2021, and was 4 for 31 this year before his arrest in January.
