The Jockey Club has elected Marshall Gramm, a horseplayer, owner, and syndicate manager, as one of eight new members, the organization announced Thursday. Gramm, the co-owner of Ten Strike Racing, is a professor in the Department of Economics at Rhodes College, where he teaches a class on betting markets. As a horseplayer, he won the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, the largest live-money handicapping tournament in the United States. Other new members include: * Joseph Appelbaum, co-founder of Off The Hook Racing, a racing, sales, and breeding operation, and a former president of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and its parent organization, the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. Appelbaum, like Gramm, also is a former winner of the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, in 2016. * John Ballantyne, owner of NBS Stables, who is the co-founder of Aldevron, a biotech company. Ballantyne is originally from New Zealand, but now has residences in North Dakota, where Aldevron is based, and Key West.  * Rick Gold, a founder of semi-conductor companies, who races in California, Australia, and New Zealand and who has served on the boards of several U.S. racing organizations. * MV Magnier, the son of Coolmore co-founder John Magnier, who manages Coolmore’s interests internationally.  * Jon Miller, president of acquisitions and partnerships with NBC Sports, which is a leading partner in racing broadcasts.  * Garrett O’Rourke, general manager of Juddmonte Farm’s operation in Kentucky. O’Rourke, originally from Ireland, was the Farm Manager of the Year in 2001. * Jessica Steinbrenner, president of Kisnman Farm in Florida who is the general partner and vice chairperson of the New York Yankees, which is owned by the Steinbrenner family.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
