Six months have passed since the 4-year-old gelding Jimmy Blue Jeans reached the winner’s circle in a March allowance race on the synthetic track at Golden Gate Fields. Along the way, he lost three stakes at Golden Gate, Santa Anita, and Del Mar, and is now back at Golden Gate for Monday’s $50,000 Sam Spear Memorial on turf. His main rivals have raced throughout the state, or other parts of the country, in recent starts. Jimmy Blue Jeans, trained by Andy Mathis for the partnership of Perry Bruno, John Gezon, and Rob Jones, will need a peak performance to win the Sam Spear Memorial, which is run at 1 1/16 miles on turf and honors the memory of the late Bay Area racing publicist and radio host who died in October 2021. Jimmy Blue Jeans is likely to set the pace, but will be closely tracked by I’mgonnabesomebody and Black Caspian. Me and Mr. C, a stakes winner at Gulfstream Park in May, looms a serious threat from off the pace in the field of nine. Mathis considered leaving Jimmy Blue Jeans at Del Mar for an allowance race before that track’s summer season ends Sept. 11, but thought a start in the Sam Spear Memorial could end a losing streak that includes a ninth in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile in April, a close second in the Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita in May, and an eighth by three lengths in the California Dreamin’ Stakes on turf after a wide trip at Del Mar on Aug. 6. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! He’s run well at Golden Gate. “We don’t have a lot of options other than running him for a tag. The purse wasn’t big enough to attract any monsters. It’s the right place to get him back on track.” I’mgonnabesomebody and Me and Mr. C were fifth and eighth in the restricted Wickerr Stakes at a mile on turf at Del Mar on July 24. Both had wide trips and were not beaten far in a field of 11. Me and Mr. C, who won the Mr. Steele Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles on turf at Gulfstream in May, is the first stakes runner at Golden Gate for nationally prominent trainer Mike Maker, who has a small division at Del Mar this summer. I’mgonnabesomebody and Black Caspian have yet to win a stakes, but recorded attractive allowance race wins in recent months. I’mgonnabesomebody, beaten 1 3/4 lengths in the Wickerr, won an allowance race on dirt at Pleasanton on July 3 with a strong move in early stretch. Black Caspian had an ideal prep for the Sam Spear Memorial, winning a one-mile allowance race on turf at Santa Rosa on Aug. 14 from slightly off the pace.
