OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Despite having a horse who has won two consecutive races, including a stakes last out, trainer Kelly Breen was still searching for a rider late Wednesday morning for his 3-year-old Courvoisier, who figures to be one of the top choices in Saturday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct. Jose Ortiz, who rode Courvoisier to victory in the Jerome on New Year’s Day, has moved his tack to Florida, but is actually coming back to ride Early Voting for Chad Brown in the Withers. Ortiz rode Early Voting to victory in his one and only start. Dylan Davis, aboard for Courvoisier’s maiden win on Dec. 2, is riding at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Other riders accepted other mounts in what swelled to an 11-horse field in the Withers. Ultimately, Breen named Ruben Silvera, who is 1 for 20 at Aqueduct this winter and who has primarily been riding at Parx. Silvera is 0 for 22 in graded stakes in his career. Courvoisier is son of Grade 1 winners Tapit and Take Charge Brandi who has shown gradual improvement with each of his five starts. On Dec. 2, he won a maiden race at the Withers distance of 1 1/8 miles before he won the Jerome cutting back to a one-turn mile in the slop and fog at Aqueduct on New Year’s Day. :: Want the best bonus in racing? Breen started Courvoisier in the Jerome primarily because the horse was doing too well at the time to leave in the barn. Despite having to train around some inclement weather, Courvoisier has gotten in a pair of solid workouts over the Belmont Park training track. A five-furlong work in 1:03.05 on Jan. 19 turned out to be the fastest of 19 at the distance while a subsequent five-furlong move in 1:02.41 was the second-fastest of 15 on Jan. 28. “He’s a funny horse,” Breen said. “He’s training well. He’s had some decent workouts on slow tracks.” Smarten Up, Cooke Creek, Unbridled Bomber, and Mr Jefferson all finished behind Courvoisier in the Jerome and are back to try him again in the Withers. Gilded Age, a son of Medaglia d’Oro who won his maiden at Churchill Downs last November for Bill Mott, ships in from South Florida. Grantham, a maiden winner over Turfway Park’s synthetic surface, ships in for Mike Maker. Also entered in the Withers are Constitutionlawyer, Un Ojo, and Noneedtoworry. The top four finishers from the Withers earn qualifying points (10-4-2-1) to the May 7 Kentucky Derby. The Withers will be one of two graded stakes on Saturday’s card as the Grade 3, $150,000 Toboggan was brought back after being canceled due to snow last week. Happy Medium and Hopeful Treasure remain the main principals. Drafted, Repo Rocks, and War Tocsin each entered back. Chateau and Penguin Power did not re-enter. Green Light Go has bullet work Green Light Go won an allowance race by nine lengths on Jan. 13, and he had his first work since then on Tuesday, drilling a half-mile in 48.48 seconds over the Belmont Park training track. It was the fastest of 80 works at the distance. “Incredible,” trainer Jimmy Jerkens said of the move. “That was great. He had a lot left after that. So far, so good.” Green Light Go is being pointed to the $125,000 Stymie Stakes on Feb. 26.
