There are wacky results and then there is the outcome of Sunday’s Grade 1 Victoria Mile for fillies and mares at Tokyo Racecourse in Japan. The turf race was won by Ten Happy Rose, who paid $233.80, and was one of four runners in a field of 15 at 100-1 or higher in American pools. In Japan, she was 207-1, the second-longest shot in the field. With the win, Ten Happy Rose earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 2. Ridden by Akihide Tsumura, Ten Happy Rose closed from the rear of the field with a wide rally through the stretch that covers more than a quarter-mile. Ten Happy Rose took the lead in the final furlong and won by 1 1/4 lengths over 14-1 Fierce Pride. Masked Diva, the 7-5 favorite, finished third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths. The $1 trifecta combining those runners paid $12,257. Namur, who won the Grade 1 Mile Championship against males last November, finished eighth at 8-5. Namur was second by a nose in the Group 1 Dubai Turf in the United Arab Emirates in March. Ten Happy Rose, a 6-year-old mare by Epiphaneia, won her Grade 1 debut in the $1.62 million Victoria Mile, and for the sixth time in her 24-race career.  She gave the 38-year-old Tsumura his first win in a Grade 1 race in his career, which began in 2004. “I had long been waiting and working hard to be able to stand on this podium as a Grade 1 winner,” Tsumura told Japan Racing Association publicity. “It feels really great that I have finally made it. The race development, from the start up until the final (turn), exceeded my imagination, and it was just a matter of how much the mare could extend her strides from there. “When we were actually leading in the last 200 meters, it was almost unbelievable.” Ten Happy Rose won her debut in a maiden race for first-time starters in August 2020. In seven previous appearances in graded stakes, Ten Happy Rose’s best result was a third in the Grade 3 Artemis Stakes for 2-year-olds at Tokyo in 2020. She won the listed Toki Stakes at seven furlongs at Niigata in August 2023. Ten Happy Rose lost her first two starts this year, finishing seventh in a Grade 3 at seven furlongs at Kyoto in February and sixth in a Grade 2 at a mile at Hanshin on April 6. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
