SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – An interesting showdown could be in the offing as Jackie’s Warrior, the top 3-year-old around one turn, and Life Is Good, the undefeated 3-year-old who was sidelined by injury in March, are both targeting the Grade 1, $600,000 H. Allen Jerkens here on Aug. 28. Jackie’s Warrior splashed his way to a 7 1/4-length victory in Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Amsterdam Stakes, dueling with and running away from Drain the Clock, who finished second. Drain the Clock had defeated Jackie’s Warrior by one length in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont on June 5. Jackie’s Warrior is 3 for 3 at Saratoga, having won the Saratoga Special and the Grade 1 Hopeful here last summer. Overall, Jackie’s Warrior is 6 for 9, but 6 for 7 in races run around one turn. He earned a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the Amsterdam. “I wouldn’t be scared of running against anyone, anywhere going one turn,” Asmussen, who won his fifth Amsterdam, said after the race. This winter, while racing in California with trainer Bob Baffert, Life Is Good went 3 for 3, including a pair of blowout victories in two-turn stakes. Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager for WinStar Farm, said the Jerkens is the return target as a stepping-stone toward two-turn races in the fall. Now with Todd Pletcher in Saratoga, Life Is Good had his second breeze here last Friday, going a half-mile in 49.14 seconds by himself over the Oklahoma. He breezed three times at Keeneland before shipping to Pletcher. “That’s our current target,” Pletcher said of the Jerkens. “See how the horse continues to train, but you’re not going to find any easy spots to come back in, I wouldn’t think.” Pletcher is also pointing Following Sea to the Jerkens. Following Sea, a solid maiden and allowance winner sprinting, was well beaten in the Haskell despite being elevated to second due to the disqualification of Hot Rod Charlie. ◗ Yaupon, last year’s Amsterdam winner and beaten favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, worked four furlongs in 49.07 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. Asmussen is pointing him to the Grade 1 Forego here on Aug. 28.
