Irad Ortiz Jr., the jockey who is likely to win his fifth Eclipse Award this year as Outstanding Jockey, set a single-season earnings record in 2023 with purses totaling $39,192,585, surpassing the record he set in 2022 by more than $2 million, according to Equibase records. Ortiz’s purse total was $9.2 million more than Tyler Gafflione earned in second place. Ortiz was also ranked first by wins in 2023, with 366 victories from 1,560 mounts. The 366 wins were the most in a single year during Ortiz’s 12-year career. Ortiz won three races on the Breeders' Cup program, including a victory on White Abarrio in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic. Ortiz has been dominant over the past seven years, ranking first by wins every year since 2017 and taking the earnings title in every year but 2021 and 2017. He was voted Outstanding Jockey from 2018-2020 and in 2022. Although far down the earnings list, Paco Lopez was second by wins, with 279 from 1,232 starts. Gaffalione was third by wins, with 270 from 1,398 mounts. Among trainers, Brad Cox, a leading contender to win his third Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer, topped the 2023 standings for earnings with purses totaling $30,947,677 million, easily besting Steve Asmussen and Todd Pletcher in a tight race for second. This was the third year in a row that Cox topped the earnings list. In 2021, he set an all-time record for earnings with $31,715,312 in purses, and he followed that up in 2022 with $31.05 million. Cox won 266 races from 963 starts in 2023, according to Equibase, for an average of $32,137 per start. Bob Baffert, the Hall of Fame trainer who won 91 races from 329 starts in 2023, was the only North American-based trainer with at least 100 starts to post a higher per-start mark, at $38,447. (Richard Dutrow, whose 27 wins included the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic with White Abarrio, and Gustavo Delgado, whose seven wins included the $3 million Kentucky Derby with Mage, had higher per-start averages.) Steve Asmussen was second in earners in 2023, with $27,514,072 from 379 winners out of 2,152 starts. Todd Pletcher was third, with $27,072,704 from 186 winners out of 980 starts. Asmussen's win total was tops in North America, the 13th time he has led in that category. Among owners, Godolphin, the international breeding and racing operation of the Maktoum family of Dubai, nearly doubled up its next leading competitor, with $17,270,223 in earnings. Godolphin won 86 races from 442 starts. It was the third year in a row that Godolphin had topped the owners’ standings. In 2021, it set a single-year record for earnings in North America with $17,421,871. In second-place was Klaravich Stables with $9.5 million in earnings, followed by Juddmonte, the international breeding and racing operation, at $6.9 million. By wins, the leading owner was Bruno Schickedanz, with 178 wins from 1,185 starts. Second went to End Zone Athletics, with 155 wins from 800 starts.
