Odds-on favorites Integration and Nadette ran to expectations in coasting to easy wins in two turf stakes Saturday at Colonial Downs. Integration won the $113,750 Million Preview Stakes by 6 3/4 lengths, paying $2.10 while beating two rivals. Place and show wagering were canceled after the Million Preview, which drew six entrants, lost half the field to scratches. Colonial canceled its Friday card because of heavy rain and labeled the course “soft” Saturday, though fractional and final times and the modest amount of turf being kicked up suggested the ground was less than laboring. In any case, Integration got what ought to have been a perfect prep for next month’s Arlington Million. Integration won his debut and the Virginia Derby over the Colonial course last year and on Saturday with jockey Kendrick Carmouche, aboard for the Virginia Derby and a win in the Hill Prince last year before the mount was given to Tyler Gaffalione for the Pegasus World Cup Turf. Integration finished a troubled fifth in that race, was third in the Grade 1 Makers Mark Mile and fourth in the Grade 1 Turf Classic before winning a race on Saturday that he essentially couldn’t lose. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Happyisashappydoes led Nineeleventurbo as Carmouche settled Integration in third, and when Carmouche asked his mount to attack past the half-mile pole and into the far turn, he got an instant response. Integration popped up to the leaders, ran alongside Nineeleventurbo to midstretch, and steadily pulled away to the wire, far superior, stopping the timer in 1:48.82 for 1 1/8 miles. “I think me and this horse get along really good; he knows me and I know him,” Carmouche said. “I wanted to sit outside and make it comfortable for him, where he can move forward into the next race.” Shug McGaughey trains Integration and said earlier this week that the Million is the colt’s immediate goal. A son of Quality Road and the Scat Daddy mare Harmonize, Integration campaigns for West Point Thoroughbreds, Woodford Racing, Pine Race Stables, and William Freeman. Nadette, in from California for Team Valor and trainer Neil Drysdale, made short work of the $125,000 Beverly D. Preview, winning by 4 3/4 lengths under Hector Berrios, paying $3. Settled last of five around the first turn, down the backstretch, and into the far turn, Nadette, Berrios no more than whispering in her ear, began gaining on the leaders at the three-furlong marker, Berrios keeping her wide into the homestretch as Nadette swooped to the front with Berrios still nearly still in the saddle. Berrios no more than threw his reins at Nadette, flagging her with a left-handed crop, as the mare strode home the easiest of winners. Canisy managed second and Blissful was third, both thoroughly dominated by the West Coast invader, the winner clocking 1:45.40 for 1 1/16 miles. Nadette made her first nine starts in France before joining Drysdale’s stable in autumn 2022. The mare lost nine North American races before breaking through April 4 with a two-length win in the Grade 2 Wilshire, and Saturday’s romp should have her confidence sky high. Five-year-old Nadette is by Outstrip out of Ciboulette, by Pivotal, and she was much too much for the Virginians on Saturday. *** Fulmineo ($4.20) jumped on the leaders in midstretch and beat a stubborn Crystal Quest by a half-length in the $127,000 Boston Stakes, a prep for the Secretariat Stakes. Trained for Starlight Racing and Mark Grier by Arnaud Delacour, Fulmineo was a one-time winner from eight outings in mid-May but now has won back-to-back stakes after capturing the James Murphy on May 18 at Pimlico. Victor Carrasco rode Fulmineo, a son of Bolt d’Oro and Starr of Quality, by First Dude. He was timed in 1:37.10 for one mile over the soft course. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
