ARCADIA, Calif. – Graded stakes winner Pee Wee Reese sustained a fetlock injury at the conclusion of a Saturday workout at San Luis Rey Downs that will prevent him from running in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 2 and likely will end his racing career. A multiple stakes winner who scored a sharp comeback victory last month in the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita, Pee Wee Reese would have been among the favorites in the BC Turf Sprint. Owner-breeder Nick Alexander was prepared to pay a $100,000 supplemental fee to make him eligible. Trainer Phil D’Amato said Pee Wee Reese was galloping out at the conclusion of a five-furlong work at San Luis Rey Downs when he took an awkward step. “He breezed great, breezed in a minute flat, and took a funny step on the gallop-out,” D’Amato said. Pee Wee Reese, who won eight races and $532,901 from 15 starts, was “comfortable” on Sunday morning at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital according to D’Amato. He said the injury was to his right fetlock; surgery on Pee Wee Reese is scheduled for Monday. While the injury almost certainly ends his racing career, Alexander and D’Amato are hopeful Pee Wee Reese recovers and is able stand as a California stallion. The 6-year-old’s 2019 campaign was to be his final year of racing. “Nick always had it mind that [2019] would be it, he wants to stand him at stud,” D’Amato said. Pee Wee Reese, by Tribal Rule, won four stakes. Prior to his comeback Oct. 27 comeback victory in the Grade 2 Eddie D on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita, he won the Grade 3 American in 2017 at Santa Anita racing a mile on turf in 1:32.26. The setback occurred on a tragic day for D’Amato and Alexander. In the fifth race Saturday at Santa Anita, their maiden Satchel Paige was injured and euthanized. “It’s heartbreaking,” D’Amato said early Sunday at his Santa Anita stable.
