Dual classic winner and champion I’ll Have Another is the newest resident of the Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement farm in Georgetown, Ky., with the organization hosting a welcome party on Friday for the stallion, who arrived earlier in the week. I’ll Have Another, who won the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and was voted Eclipse Award divisional champion, is the fourth Derby-Preakness winner to be retired to the farm. The others are Silver Charm (1997), who is the oldest living Derby winner; Charismatic (1999), who died in 2017; and War Emblem (2002), who died in 2020. Old Friends also houses Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold (1997) and was home to Sarava (2002), who died in 2023. “Welcoming I’ll Have Another is an auspicious and historic moment for Old Friends,” said John Nicholson, who assumed the role of president and CEO of Old Friends earlier this year. “We are deeply grateful to [owner] Paul Reddam and [trainer] Doug O’Neill for choosing Old Friends to care for this great champion and to celebrate his magnificent legacy with thousands of our annual visitors. Being able to welcome our fourth Kentucky Derby winner to retire at Old Friends is further tribute to the vision and values of our founder and my friend, Michael Blowen.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Despite his prep wins, he was not among the top wagering choices on the first Saturday in May. I’ll Have Another broke from post 19 in the full field under Mario Gutierrez, and made steady progress before coming four-wide at the quarter pole for his run. He surged by to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Bodemeister, returning $32.60 for the win. In the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, Bodemeister was favored and held a clear lead in the stretch, but I’ll Have Another wore him down to win by a neck, setting him up for a Triple Crown bid three weeks later. But the day before the race, the colt was scratched with a soft-tissue injury and then retired. He concluded his career with five wins from seven starts and earnings of more than $2.6 million. I’ll Have Another was sold by Reddam to begin his stud career at Japan’s Big Red Farm beginning in 2013, then was purchased by Ballena Vista Farm in Ramona, Calif., and repatriated for the 2019 season. In 2020, O’Neill privately purchased the horse and turned him over to the Reddams, who stood him at their Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsail, Calif., for his final three seasons at stud.  “I'll Have Another is an amazing horse – very blue collar, workmanlike,” O’Neill said. “He was so naturally competitive. He meant and still means so much to us around the barn. He took us on the ride of a lifetime winning the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and the Preakness. We're so grateful for his brilliance and being able to work alongside him during his amazing career.” I’ll Have Another is the sire of 312 winners worldwide through Thursday, led by Japanese graded stakes winners Another Truth and Win Marvel, three other stakes winners, and an additional seven stakes-placed runners. Now pensioned from stallion duty, I’ll Have Another will live out his years at Old Friends – also home to O’Neill’s multiple Grade 1 winner Lava Man, who, in his second career as a pony for the barn, took I’ll Have Another to the post for his major wins. “We are so grateful to Mr. Reddam and to Doug for trusting us to give their Derby and Preakness winner a safe, healthy, and fun retirement,” Old Friends founder Blowen said. “We're planning to put I'll Have Another in the paddock adjacent to Lava Man's. How cool is that?” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
