The champion mare Idiomatic will make her next start July 20 at Monmouth Park in the Grade 3, $500,000 Molly Pitcher Stakes. Idiomatic returned to trainer Brad Cox’s Churchill Downs string after her agonizing second-place finish June 8 in the Ogden Phipps at Saratoga and is scheduled to have her first timed workout since that race either Thursday or Friday, Cox said. Idiomatic, a Juddmonte Farms homebred 5-year-old, won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff to seal an Eclipse Award last year. She returned to win the Grade 1 La Troienne in May, and was caught wide chasing the slow pace of Randomized on a speed-favoring Saratoga track in the Phipps, coming up just short. Cox sees no reason to keep Idiomatic in the barn until the Grade 1 Personal Ensign on Aug. 23 at Saratoga. “People don’t realize how spread out these races are for her,” Cox said. “She’s only had two starts this year. She’s not going to be around forever. Why not run her?” If all goes to plan, Idiomatic will go from the Molly Pitcher to the Personal Ensign, then try to repeat in the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland and in the BC Distaff. :: Bet with the Best! Highland Falls won Grade 3 Blame at Churchill Downs in his most recent start. Cox could have a runner for the Haskell, too, but doesn’t yet know how his 3-year-olds will shake out. He does plan to run two colts, Just a Touch and Dragoon Guard, in coming weeks, but as of Wednesday wasn’t certain which horse would go to the Iowa Derby, which to the Indiana Derby. Rebel Stakes winner Timberlake, unraced since a poor showing March 30 in the Arkansas Derby, also populates the Cox 3-year-old division, with the Jim Dandy and Haskell under consideration. Cox has two 3-year-old fillies pointed to sprint races in New York, Emery to the July 4 Victory Ride at Aqueduct, Almostgone Rocket toward the Grade 1 Test on Aug. 3 at Saratoga. And Saudi Crown has returned to the work tab after getting a break following his 12th-place finish March 30 in the Godolphin Mile in Dubai. Cox said he wants to use the Ack Ack in September at Churchill as a springboard to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, and while Saudi Crown will race before the Ack Ack, when and where are yet to be determined. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
