ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Hezgothelook Z became the second 2-year-old Quarter Horse to sweep the three futurities traditionally held at Ruidoso Downs with a neck victory in Monday’s $3 million All American Futurity at The Downs at Albuquerque. Heszgothelook Z, who paid $3.40 in a field of nine, was visibly exhausted after the race, enough for jockey Bryan Candanosa to dismount about 100 yards before Hezgothelook Z reached the winner’s circle. Hezgothelook Z was walked into the winner’s circle. Trainer Toby Keeton, who teamed with Candanosa to win two other major stakes on the program, said a challenge by eventual second-place finisher Kj Bad Moon Rising took a severe toll on Hezgothelook Z. “He’s never had to gut it up that hard and that horse came to him and it drained him,” Keeton said. “He’s tired. He’s not a big horse. He gives it all.” After a winner’s circle ceremony, Hezgothelook Z was walked slowly to the backstretch test barn. Keeton said that Hezgothelook Z will not race again this year. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Hezgothelook Z was not vanned to the test barn because both of the track’s equine ambulances were in use to transport Mountainaire and The Brink Man V back to the stable area. Mountainaire and The Brink Man V finished fifth and sixth. Keeton, who trains Mountainaire, and Heath Taylor, who trains The Brink Man V, said those horses were not injured and showed signs of fatigue. Overall, three horses were vanned to the stables after major races on Monday. An hour after the race at his barn, Keeton said Mountainaire was hampered when she jumped shadows of the grandstand midway through the race. The incident left jockey Ricky Ramirez briefly unbalanced in the saddle. Hezgothelook Z joins Special Effort in 1981 as the only horses to win the Ruidoso Futurity at 350 yards in late spring, the Rainbow Futurity at 400 yards in July, and the All American Futurity at 440 yards, a Labor Day fixture. When Special Effort swept the series at Ruidoso Downs in 1981, the first of the races was known as the Kansas Futurity. The All American Futurity was held for the first time at The Downs at Albuquerque on Monday after the Ruidoso Downs meeting was transferred in late July following a series of floods that damaged the Ruidoso Downs track. The floods were caused by runoff from local mountains scarred by wildfires in June. Hezgothelook Z was part of a staggeringly successful day for Candanosa and Keeton. They won the $1,041,017 All American Derby with Dashing Tres ($6.40), the $250,000 All American Gold Cup with Jess Good Wine ($7), and the $200,000 All American Juvenile with Aguila Rapida ($3.40). Keeton-trained runners swept the trifecta in the All American Derby. Monday’s program was the richest day in Quarter Horse racing history. The Juvenile is the consolation of the All American Futurity. In the winner’s circle after Aguila Rapida’s win, Candanosa proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Shianne Andrew of Arlington, Texas. She said yes. Hezgothelook Z races for the Triple One Ranch of Leo and Norma Olivarez of Mission, Texas. A gelding by Favorite Cartel, who is by the 1997 Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, Hezgothelook Z has won 6 of 7 starts and earned $2,358,300. Hezgothelook Z was fifth in his debut in a futurity trial at Sam Houston on April 19 and has not lost since, winning time trials for the Ruidoso, Rainbow and All American futurities. On Monday, Hezgothelook Z was timed in 21.12 seconds, and edged 20-1 Kj Bad Moon Rising. Wes Giles, the trainer of Kj Bad Moon Rising, claimed foul against Candanosa, alleging interference shortly after the start when Kj Bad Moon Rising sustained a bump from Hezgothelook Z. The stewards dismissed the objection. Fdd Dreams (6-1) finished third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths. Dashing Tres overcame an early bump to win the All American Derby by a neck over 7-1 Visa, who finished a nose in front of 11-1 Shoeless. Dashing Tres ran 440 yards in 20.95 seconds. The Marksman V, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth by a half-length and was vanned to the stables because of fatigue, Taylor said. Dashing Tres, owned by Bob McClure, won the Ruidoso Derby in June. Jess Good Wine won his fifth consecutive stakes in the All American Gold Cup, his first start since the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship on June 1. Owned by the three-person Guns Up Racing partnership, Jess Good Wine finished 440 yards in a sharp 20.80 seconds, not far off the 2010 track record of 20.70 seconds. Jess Good Wine finished three-quarters of a length in front of 1-2 Flash Bak, who had not raced since a win in the Championship at Sunland Park in January. Out of the Way (14-1) finished third in the field of five. Kj Desparado, the all-time richest Quarter Horse with earnings of $3,108,099, finished fourth, beaten 2 1/2 lengths. The only major upset of the four major stakes on Monday occurred in the $661,653 All American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies when Especially Goodcandy ($19) edged 15-1 Miss Hi Tide by a half-length in the 440-yard race. Especially Goodcandy, ridden by Ramirez, was timed in 20.92 seconds. Flying Sophia (5-1) finished third, a nose behind Miss Hi Tide and a nose in front of 3-2 favorite Running to the Moon. Especially Goodcandy races for Mary and Annette McCloy and trainer Trey Wood. The All American Oaks was her second start of 2024 after a sharp maiden race win in a division of the time trials on Aug. 11. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
