SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Naturally, the Travers is the most important race on the Saturday card at Saratoga, but collectively the six undercard stakes carry a lot of weight, too – and will ultimately determine which horseplayers win and which lose. The undercard is comprised of five Grade 1’s, including four Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re in qualifiers, and a Grade 2. While the $1 million Sword Dancer is the second-richest race of the day behind the $1.25 million Travers, the premier matchup of the day comes in the $700,000 Personal Ensign when Abel Tasman and Elate square off at 1 1/8 miles. In addition to the lion’s share of the purse, the winner will earn a fees-paid berth in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs. Abel Tasman has only started twice this year for trainer Bob Baffert but actually holds a seasoning edge over Elate, whose lone 4-year-old start came in the $750,000 Delaware Handicap in mid-July. Trainer Bill Mott had Elate trained to the minute for the 1 1/4-mile Del Cap, and she galloped to 3 1/4-length victory after jockey Jose Ortiz sent her to the lead 3 1/2 furlongs from the wire. The Personal Ensign will be the first start for Abel Tasman, last year’s champion 3-year-old filly, since she romped by 7 1/2 lengths in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Mike Smith will be in for the ride. The six-horse field also includes Farrell and Wow Cat, who finished first and second, a neck apart, in the Grade 3 Shuvee at the Spa on July 29. The 1 1/2-mile Sword Dancer, a Win and You’re In for the $4 million BC Turf, has drawn a competitive field of 10. The group includes six horses from the Grade 2 Bowling Green, led by dead-heat winners Channel Maker and Glorious Empire. The Bowling Green was decided over soft ground, which did not suit favored Hi Happy, who finished sixth. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he will only run Hi Happy on Saturday if the ground is firm, which it should be, according to Wednesday forecasts. The Sword Dancer field also include Grade 1 United Nations winner Funtastic, Grade 1 Manhattan winner Spring Quality, and the 3-year-old Seahenge, who arrived from Ireland on Tuesday. The $600,000 Forego, a seven-furlong Win and You’re In for the $1 million BC Dirt Mile, has an eight-horse field that includes California shipper City of Light, a two-time Grade 1 winner at the distance who is trained by Michael McCarthy. Limousine Liberal and Whitmore, who finished a neck apart when first and second in the Grade 2 Belmont Sprint Championship, also are entered. The $500,000 Ballerina will match Grade 2 Honorable Miss winner Finley’sluckycharm against Lewis Bay, who in her last start won the Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses at Belmont Park by 5 1/2 lengths. The nine-horse field also includes the Bob Baffert-trained Marley’s Freedom; Union Strike, who will be making her debut for Steve Asmussen; Ivy Bell, who will be turning back to what may be her best distance; and Highway Star, who was beaten a head in this race a year ago. The Ballerina is a Win and You’re In for the $1 million BC Filly and Mare Sprint. The $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens, a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, will mark the first starts for Firenze Fire and Still Having Fun since their impressive victories at Belmont Park. Firenze Fire was brilliant winning the Grade 3, one-mile Dwyer by nine lengths for trainer Jason Servis. Still Having Fun, who is based at Laurel Park with trainer Tim Keefe, stormed from far off the pace to win the Grade 2 Woody Stephens at seven furlongs. Promises Fulfilled earned a race high Beyer Speed Figure of 108 with his three-length win in the Amsterdam at Saratoga on July 28. The card also includes the Grade 2, $400,000 Ballston Spa, which features the Chad Brown trio of A Raving Beauty, Off Limits, and Quidura, plus Hawksmoor, Proctor’s Ledge, and Great Britain shipper Indian Blessing.
