Favorites Mischief Joke and Sweet Brown Sugar were easy multiple-lengths winners of the $50,000 Ontario County Stakes and $50,000 Niagara Stakes, respectively, as the stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds were the co-features on Monday at Finger Lakes.  Mischief Joke ($2.90) pressed the pace through a scramble down the backstretch, and began to edge ahead of early leader Stars N Stones through the half-mile in 46.72 seconds. He had more in the tank, powering away under jockey Andre Worrie to win by 5 1/4 lengths, in 1:12.92 for the six furlongs on the fast track.  Mischief Joke, trained by Mike Maker, is an experienced runner with 13 career starts. He has won two stakes — the Ontario County joining the Rego Park earlier this year at Aqueduct — and has placed in two others.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Earlier in the card in the sister race, Sweet Brown Sugar ($2.10), who had Jeremias Flores in the irons for trainer Paul Barrow, broke from the rail in a field of five for the Niagara, and had opened a length lead through a modest opening quarter of 24.44 seconds. It was essentially all over from there, as the filly widened as she pleased through the lane for a 5 1/2-length win. She finished the six furlongs in 1:12.41. Love Thyself edged Dorth’s Sol Dancer, who had been chasing in second, by a half-length for the place spot.  This was the third career stakes win for Sweet Brown Sugar, going along with the Shesastonecoldfox Stakes last fall at Finger Lakes and the East View Stakes this March at Aqueduct.  Although both Monday’s races were six-furlong sprints, they could conceivably produce starters for two of Finger Lakes’ biggest events next month – the $150,000 New York Derby and $75,000 New York Oaks, both at 1 1/16 miles on July 15. With no other dirt sprint stakes for the divisions this summer, New York-bred 3-year-olds would either need to switch surfaces or move to two turns at Saratoga for another state-restricted stakes opportunity before fall. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
