VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Barbara Heads and Edgar Mendoza are one-two in the trainer’s standings at Hastings, and they figure to add to their riches when they send out a strong group of horses in the six $50,000 stakes races that make up the bulk of the eight-race B.C. Cup Day card on Monday. Mendoza is particularly loaded with possible favorites in four of the stakes and also in an open allowance sprint that drew a stakes-quality field, including Be Quick, who won the $50,000 Lieutenant Governor’s for Mendoza on July 1. The stakes-rich card gets under way at 2 p.m. Pacific. The Classic for 3-year-olds and up is supposedly the headliner, and it is an excellent betting race with no standout. However, the stars of the show are the Heads-trained Infinite Patience, who will be a short price to win the Distaff, and U Did It, who has been nothing but sensational in her six starts for Mendoza. U Did It will be a prohibitive favorite in the Hong Kong Jockey Club for 3-year-old fillies that drew seven horses. The Distaff goes as the third race, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club wraps up the card. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Join DRF Bets. U Did It can be singled in the pick five, which going into Sunday has a $66,999 carryover. If the jackpot wager is not hit, there will be a mandatory payout Monday. Infinite Patience will be going for her seventh straight victory in the 1 1/16-mile Distaff, which drew seven horses. She figures to move forward after easily handling her stablemate Solarity going 6 1/2 furlongs in the $50,000 Monashee in her first start of the year July 1. The scary thing is the 5-year-old daughter of Montero has never lost going a middle distance on dirt and after breezing five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on July 24, she galloped out a strong six furlongs in 1:12.20 with her usual rider Antonio Reyes aboard. “What can I say about her,” Heads said. “We all know who she is, and she is doing great right now.” The versatile 5-year old daughter of Sungold will break from post 4 with Reyes up. She figures to either dominate the race from the start or Reyes can ease her into a stalking position behind Daphne and Rea Mea. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! U Did It was undefeated in four starts before finishing second as the heavy chalk in the $50,000 River Rock on June 11. However, it was remarkable she did not completely collapse after she dueled with Belcarra Park through ridiculous interior fractions. No mistakes were made by Reyes when he eased her into a stalking position in the $50,000 Supernaturel on July 1. She was a bit eager early, but the daughter of Teide did settle and then drew off in the stretch to win the 1 1/16-mile race with authority over Belcarra Park. Mendoza was pleased with U Did It’s five-furlong breeze in 1:03.00 on July 22. “We just wanted to give her something to do and put a little air into her,” he said. “She has been training super.” She will break from post 2 with Reyes up. Mendoza has an excellent chance of winning the Debutante with Higher Image, who finished fourth in her debut June 26. The 6 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-old filles kicks off the stakes portion of the card in the second race. Higher Image got off to a slow start in the 3 1/2-furlong $50,000 optional maiden claimer before she finished with determination. Being a half-sister to three route winners, including Giftorm, who won the Group 3 Zawawi Cup going six furlongs on dirt in Sweden, she could thrive in her first try in a two-turn sprint. “I think the added distance will really benefit her,” said Mendoza, who leads the trainer standings in terms of stakes won with six, four clear of Heads and her brother Robbie Anderson. Leading rider Amadeo Perez picks up the mount from Reyes. Gunfighter and Regal Riot figure to vie for favoritism in the 1 1/16-mile Sir Winston Churchill, which drew six 3-year-olds and goes as the fifth race. Gunfighter, trained by Johh Snow, loomed boldly at the sixteenth pole in the $50,000 Chris Loseth, but could not get past Regal Riot, who re-broke when confronted. The Robbie Anderson-trained Regal Riot was up close to the slow pace, and with more potential speed in the field in the Churchill, Gunfighter could have a slight edge. The Mendoza-trained Soaringforthesun is not without a chance after finishing third in the Churchill. Legacy Square was impressive winning his maiden for Mendoza when he debuted July 1 in the $50,000 Spaghetti Mouse and is the one to beat in the Nursery. After all, he is a half-bother to U Did It and he broke flat-footed in his debut, so there is room for improvement. He will break from post 3 with Efrain Hernandez retaining the mount. They will all have to catch Rememberthealamo, who broke like a rocket when he won a $50,000 optional maiden claimer going 3 1/2 furlongs in his second start for trainer Dino Condilenios on July 9. The first foal out the two-time sprint stakes winner Dear Lilly could be tough to reel in if he breaks as well leaving from post 2 with Silvino Morales up. The 1 1/16-mile Classic drew seven horses, but the race is between the Mendoza-trained Porter Gent and Stay Fantastic and At Attention, who will be saddled by Heads. At Attention is coming off back-to-back wins going 1 1/16 miles over Stay Fantastic in a nonwinners-of-four allowance race with a $40,000 claiming option June 19 and an unrestricted allowance race July 17. In each race, the 5-year-old gelding by Shanghai Bobby rallied late with Reyes aboard to edge Stay Fantastic by a head. The pace will not likely be as fast in the Classic, so the edge could go to Stay Fantastic, who figures to stalk with Hernandez riding. Porter Gent could end up favored. The 5-year-old Tod Mountain homebred by Second in Command is coming off an unlucky loss by a nose to Be Quick in the Lieutenant Governor’s. He was full of run in the 6 1/2-furlong dash, but was stuck behind horses until Perez moved him into the clear just after turning for home. He finished with conviction but lost the head bob at the wire. In his only route attempt, Porter Gent set the pace before settling for second in the $50,000 Sir Winston Churchill as a 3-year-old in 2020. With a 7-7-1 record from 16 lifetime starts, we know he is going to try, and given the lack of pure speed in the field he should get a nice trip from a forward position. He also could be the one they have to run down if he breaks on top from post 2 with Perez up.
