Havre de Grace, the 2011 Horse of the Year, died early April 30 from complications after delivering a colt by Into Mischief two days prior. Havre de Grace's death, which followed episodes of hemorrhaging, was first reported by the Thoroughbred Daily News. Havre de Grace was a 16-year-old daughter of Horse of the Year Saint Liam, from his only crop. The mare, who raced for the late Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm, had been boarded at Wayne and Cathy Sweezy's Timber Town Farm in Lexington, Ky., since Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm purchased her for $10 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale. “She was just so smart, she fought all the way to the end, so full of grace, like her name says,” Pope told TDN. “She was stoic right to the end. I am so grateful that I was able to be here, it would have been a great deal more difficult if I hadn't made it up." Havre de Grace put together a race record of 16-9-4-2 and earned $2,586,175. She won five graded stakes, with her three Grade 1 scores including the 2011 Woodward Stakes over males at Saratoga. She joined fellow Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in 2009 as the only females ever to win that race. Havre de Grace is the dam of five winners from as many starters, led by Grade 3 winner Graceful Princess. Her new Into Mischief colt has not suffered any ill effects and has been placed on a nurse mare.
