Driven by Kyle Wilfong, Sugar Instead led through fractions of 26 4/5, 56 3/5 and 1:26 and pulled away in a 29 second final quarter to win by ten lengths in 1:55. Danger (Robert Taylor) and Tove Palema (Andy Miller) were second and third, respectively. The Virgil Morgan Jr.-trained daughter of Volstead was bred by Elmer Miller and is owned by Joyce McClelland and Larry Wills. Sugar Instead has a summary of 21-2-1 from 27 outings, has earned $901,914 and paid $2.80 to win. The other $27,600 Bally's Randy split for trotting fillies saw Pizelle (Trace Tetrick), a daughter of Walner owned by trainer Chris Beaver in partnership with Donald Robinson, rally from sixth at three-quarters to a three length triumph over Green Mercedes (Miller) in a 1:55 1/5 mile. Stella Volo (Peter Wrenn) was third. Brittany Farms bred Pizzelle, who captured last year's Goldsmith Maid final. Local star Gruesome Twosome captured his $50,000 Bally's Randy flight for trotting colts and geldings from first-up in 1:54 4/5 with co-owner/trainer/driver Daryl Bontrager in the bike.
