As part of Dan Patch Night, Harrah’s Hoosier Park is putting up a $30,000 guarantee on the late Pick 4 on August 9. The sequence is full of large fields and seems like a wagering must on Friday. Let’s take a look. Race 12: Jon Schuster Memorial Final Very difficult race to kick off the sequence and while first-round winners (5) MACHDAVID and (10) BIG WHEELS A figure to be players worth using on your tickets, the former had a perfect trip last time and the latter is buried in the second tier inside of another foe to his outside. So while I’ll use both on my ticket, they aren’t my prime focus for secondary tickets. I like the possibility of (8) WORKIN ONA MYSTERY flaunting some of his class and trying to gun to the front in this spot. He’s perhaps not the horse he once was but is still capable in a field like this one. (9) WATCHING OUR COIN N came first-over into Big Wheels A last time and was a good second as the chalk. He can certainly make noise despite the post. (2) AWAY WE GO A was parked the entire way last week, got backed into by his escort and finished with steady pace. A better trip would give him a shot. Race 13: $300K Dan Patch This really is a terrific race in terms of competitiveness. Almost any of these could win given a smooth trip and the right setup. That said, I like (8) SEVEN COLORS to wake up with a big mile. After missing a month of action he returned with a “tour the track” performance at The Meadowlands last weekend where he came home in 25 4/5. That start will do plenty to sharpen him up and we should see early speed this time. The only negative is that Dexter Dunn decided not to make the trip. (10) CHARLIE MAY was second in this race from post 10 last year and he does tend to perk up on a big track. I don’t usually love the second tier but there is plenty of speed in front of him to make sure he gets away in close order. (3) Buzzsaw Russ is a capable local horse with plenty of form that seems likely to be an underlay on the toteboard. Race 14: The Manley Sturgis (1) ANGEL HILL is going to be a single on most tickets and it is hard to make a case against her. The 4-year-old mare has reeled off three straight wins since joining the Tyler George barn and stopped the clock in sub-1:50 each time. None of the others in this field have broken the 1:51 barrier. Some will point to Trace Tetrick choosing #4 as a negative, but of course he is going to stick with a 3-year-old Sire Stakes horse over a 4-year-old because of future races. Race 15: Myron McHenry Final The top two finishers in the preliminary round – (1) ROCKET RUSSELL, (2) DIRTY IMAGE, (7) BLACKLIST Z TAM and (8) ROCKIN MARTY A – are all clearly contenders this week as each raced well. Of that group, Blacklist Z Tam ranks lowest on my list, but because he has the early speed to settle into a good spot, I’ll use him. Others worth strong consideration are (3) SWEET TRUTH, who sat last as the favorite last week and really had no chance despite a 25 4/6 final quarter, and longshot (11) FRED AND ROZ, who appeared to have pace but ran into the horse in front of him and made a break when trying to access the passing lane. .50 Ticket: 2,5,8,9,10 / 8,10 / 1 / 1,2,3,7,8,11 = $30
