The record pace at the 2022 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale showed no signs of slowing down on Tuesday. The sale once again reached a $20,000,000 gross, with the total for 227 yearlings checking in at $20,433,000, and the average was $90,013, an increase of 6.9 percent over the corresponding session a year ago. Through the first two days, the gross for the sale stands at $43,500,000 and the average is $124,642. Trotting fillies are leading the way average-wise, with 98 of them going for $135,735, and their pacing counterparts are second with 50 sold for an average of $132,320. On the male side, 129 trotters have gone through the ring for an average of $118,566, and 72 pacers have gone for an average of $115,097. Venerable sire Bettor's Delight leads the averages at $207,500 for eight yearlings, followed by Captaintreacherous ($165,389/36 horses sold), Greenshoe ($163,943/35 sold), Muscle Hill ($139,688/32 sold) and Chapter Seven ($139,610/41 sold). Tuesday's action was topped by HIP 197 Flashback Bi, a colt from the first crop of Greenshoe who was purchased by Courant Inc. for $500,000. Flashback Bi, who is a brother to multi-time stakes winner You Ato Dream and to Ari Ferrari J, a Bluegrass Series winner for 2-year-old colt and gelding trotters last week, gave Hunterton Sales Agency the highest-priced seller for the second consecutive day. "[We bought him] because we saw a lot of Greenshoe in him. He looked very talented and he had flawless conformation. He was very really well balanced in his body. We just love him," said Sabine Kagebrandt, CEO of Courant Inc., who also campaigned the sire during his racing career. "We are very happy with what we've bought so far, and it's looking so good for Greenshoe. From what I hear about them, many are very happy with the Greenshoe yearlings." Checking in the number two spot was HIP 200 Eunoia Hanover, a Captaintreacherous filly who went to Nancy Takter as agent for Caviart Farms for $375,000. Eunoia Hanover, bred and consigned by Hanover Shoe Farms, is a full sister Pennsylvania Sire Stakes leg winners Energetic Hanover and Ervin Hanover. "Every year we look to buy a really good, quality filly. We're trying to build our broodmare band, and so we keep trying to up that level," remarked Buck Chaffee from Caviart Farms. "This filly passed all the tests. She was well put together, in fact we couldn't find any flaws at all. Conformation was perfect, and good breeding, a very good family. She had everything we wanted. We didn't want to go that high, of course. I think there was one other person bidding. "We went to see her after the sale, and we're very happy. She's got good size, she's not huge, but she's got good size. She looks like she'll do well, and if she doesn't hit the races, we've got a broodmare. Last year we bought Caviart Davia, and she's been racing well. She won a couple of stakes up in Canada. She's down here racing in the International Stallion this weekend, and hopefully she does well." ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Tony Alagna went home with HIP 324 San Jose and HIP 210 Fly By for $300,000 and $275,000, respectively. San Jose, a Captaintreacherous colt bred and consigned by Brittany Farms, is a half-brother to Pepsi North America Cup champion Pebble Beach, and Fly By, a Chapter Seven colt consigned by Kentuckiana Farms as agent, is from the family of Dream Vacation. Completing the session's top five was HIP 171 In Your Eyes at $280,000. Consigned by Cane Run Farm as agent and acquired by Euro Stall SE, this Cantab Hall filly is out of the $492K+ earner Bright Baby Blues. The sale will resume on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with HIPs 367-604 going through the ring. --quotes by Chris Tully--
