It was another record-setting session on Wednesday's second night of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.  The gross was $13,651,000, the highest-ever, and the average was up 8.9 percent over last year's second night.  As in 2017, the second evening produced the overall sale-topper as HIP 214 Chestnut Hill, a Muscle Hill colt, went to agent Richard "Nifty" Norman for $410,000. Chestnut Hill, bred by Melvin Hartman and David McDuffee, sold from the Peninsula Farm (agent) consignment.  He is the fourth foal and first Muscle Hill out of Poof She's Gone, a Kadabra mare who earned $1.3 million and was a multiple stakes and award winner in both the United States and Canada. "He's a beautiful colt and a beautiful individual out of a great mare," said Norman, who will be training the colt for a group that is believed to include at least Hartman, McDuffee and Jeff Gural.  "I trained the mother, and I had the other ones out of the mare, but he was outstanding.  TheDerick GiwnerBellareina Dolce in the ring price was nuts." Coming in right behind Chestnut Hill at $400,000 was HIP 113 Bellareina Dolce.  A Muscle Hill filly, she was purchased by agent Lina Alm for Lennart Agren's SRF Stable.  Bellareina Dolce, bred by McDuffee, also sold for consignor Peninsula Farm.  She is out of Bella Dolce (Kadabra, $730,384), and this makes her a half-sister to three six-figure earners. "I do a lot of work for SRF Stable, and this is one of the things I got to do tonight," said Alm, who also works in the industry videoing horses for sales in Sweden.  "Lennart likes to have many eyes on the horses. That's his way of doing it.  I've been studying the horse and the pedigree together with Thomas Moberg.  He's the pedigree expert.  We decided together.  I watched the horse and got a feeling for it.  I tried to do a good job.  I'm very picky about things, but we want them to able to race for a long time." Alm wasn't exactly sure who would be training the horse, but Agren has full faith in her and Moberg. "He trusts me and Thomas.  We work together and we've had some success doing it," she added.  "We found Perfect Spirit for him and also some other nice horses.  If you show some results, of course he will get a lot of confidence in you. "Of course we love the pedigree.  Lennart has other horses from the same family in Brooklyn Hill and Deepdish, but the queen of this family is of course the legendary Impish." Kenneth Jacobs was a busy man during the night, buying four big-ticket items, including HIP 162 Seven Links, a Chapter Seven filly, for $285,000.  She is out of Lindys Head Nurse (Donato Hanover) and a half-sister to NYSS leg winner Oooteeny (Credit Winner).  Seven Links was bred by Our Horse Cents Stables and sold from the consignment of agent Spring Haven Farm. "I’m 81, what’s the difference," Jacobs said about his spending spree. "I’m going to leave it all to my grandson anyway.  I’m trying (to get a champion). I want to get another Walner." Derick GiwnerKen Jacobs had plenty of bullets to fireJacobs's other purchases were colts HIP 158 American Lindy (American Ideal-Think Pink) for $245,000 and HIP 151 Realdeal Blue Chip (Chapter Seven-Southwind Caitlin) for $205,000, and filly HIP 188 Seventh Wonder, another by Chapter Seven (out of L Dees Maggie) for $200,000.  Linda Toscano will train Seven Links and American Lindy and George Ducharme will handle the conditioning of Realdeal Blue Chip and Seventh Wonder. "Lindy is part of my partnership with Walner, so I want to make sure I give something back," Jacobs said regarding his purchase of American Lindy, who is out of a half-sister to millionaire Big Jim. Also selling for $200,000 or more during the night were HIP 230 Father Jonathon, a Father Patrick-Sleep Tight My Luv colt who went to agent Jim Glass for $275,000, Muscle Hill-Counter Pointe colt Southwind Crusher (HIP 129), who was grabbed by a partnership of Courant Inc. and Herb Liverman for $215,000, and HIP 163 Captain Kirk, a Captaintreacherous-Aria Hanover colt who was purchased for $200,000 by Tony Alagna as agent for Captains Court. Muscle Hill led the way on the night with the top two sellers and an average of $140,588 for 17 yearlings.  Coming in behind him were Chapter Seven, Bettor's Delight, Father Patrick, and Captaintreacherous.  The top buyer through the first two days is Burke Racing Stable LLC. at $1,085,000 for nine horses, followed by Jacobs, Dana Parham, agent Bryan Montgomery, and Determination Stable. Through two sessions the sale is up just shy of 10 percent from the first two nights of 2017 , and sales co-manager Randy Manges is beaming about the results. "How did that happen, that's exactly what I say.  It's great," he said.  "I thought tonight, even more than last night, there was a little more energy in the crowd.  Last night was a great night, but I thought tonight there seemed to be a little more excitement and a little more going on.  That's always good to see." While thrilled about how Wednesday went, Manges is also upbeat about what is coming up the remainder of the yearling sale. "I thought it'd be good.  I knew we had good horses to sell tonight," remarked Manges.  "We had a great sale last year, so I like to be optimistic, but I wasn't that optimistic.  I think tomorrow night we've got a good bunch of horses selling.  Really all the way through the sale.  Then of course on the last night, besides some horses left to sell, we have some Indiana horses, some Ohio horses that we set in that session.  Last year we were fortunate to sell one of the Ohio-breds for $300,000, which was one of the highest in the sale.  We look forward to that being good again this year." Thursday night's session will see HIPS 281-446 offered up.  For full results of the sale up to this point, click here.
