Happy Saver earned a berth into next month’s Preakness Stakes on Monday, when he improved his career record to 3 for 3 in the $100,000 Federico Tesio at Laurel Park. The race was one of five stakes on the card. They were designed as preps for Preakness Weekend stakes at Pimilico. The $1 million Preakness will be run Oct. 3. Happy Saver ($2.40) was making his stakes debut and tracked Monday Morning Qb through fractions of 24.76 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.82 for the half-mile, and 1:13.13 for six furlongs. Happy Saver moved to the fore into the stretch and went on to cover the 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1:49.15. “He really turned it on that last eighth of a mile, the last quarter,” winning rider Trevor McCarthy said on the broadcast from Laurel. “They were running. “This horse is all class. Anything you want to do, he’ll do for you.” Happy Saver won by 1 1/2 lengths over Monday Morning Qb, while it was another nine lengths back in third to Big City Bob. Happy Saver on Saturday was scratched from the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga in favor of the Tesio. The horse, trained by Todd Pletcher, launched his career June 20 with a maiden special weight win over seven furlongs at Belmont Park. Happy Saver earned $60,000 for the win in the Tesio.  In other stakes action, Grand Cru Classe fought off Market Rumor and Grade 1 winner Perfect Alibi to remain undefeated in three starts in the $100,000 Weber City Miss. She also earned a berth into the Grade 2, $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan, which this year will be run on the same card as the Preakness. The Weber City Miss was for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. Grand Cru Classe ($4) broke on top from the rail Monday and set fractions of 23.86 for the opening quarter, 48.45 for the half-mile, and 1:13.29 for six furlongs. In the stretch, she was challenged on either side by Perfect Alibi and by Market Rumor, but held for a neck win in 1:44.02. “She was pretty quick out of the gate and that was the plan, to break out of there and let them come get us,” jockey Julian Pimentel told publicity at Laurel. Bill Mott trains Grand Cru Classe, who was making her two-turn debut after winning a maiden special weight at six furlongs in May at Gulfstream Park and a first-level allowance at a mile in July at Belmont Park. In her debut, she defeated Doll Collection, a daughter of champion Groupie Doll. Grand Cru Classe is a daughter of Bernardini who races for Speedway Stable. She is from the female family of Grade 1 winner Christmas Kid. Market Rumor was second, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of third-place finisher Perfect Alibi. Nay Lady Nay ($4) won the fourth stakes race of her young career when she stalked the pace set by Jabuticaba and went on to a 5 1/2-length win in the $100,000 All Along for fillies and mares. She covered the 1 1/8 miles on good turf in 1:51.88. Victor Carrasco was aboard for trainer Chad Brown. Nay Lady Nay is a 4-year-old daughter of No Nay Never who has now won 5 of 8 starts, among her other wins the Grade 3 Mrs. Revere at Churchill and the Grade 3 Matchmaker at Monmouth. She races for First Row Partners and Hidden Brook Farm. There was no show wagering with the field scratched down to four horses Monday. Doctor Mounty ($6) set a controlled pace and had more in the tank for a 1 3/4-length win in the $100,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes. Ninety One Assault finished second, while it was another half-length back in third to Serve the King. Forest Boyce was aboard the winner, who set fractions of 25.18 for the opening quarter, 50.41 for the half-mile, and 1:14.49 for six furlongs before going on to cover the 1 1/16 miles on good turf in 1:44.98. Shug McGaughey trains the son of Street Sense for Larry Pratt and Dave Alden. Completed Pass ($7) held for a three-quarter-length win over So Street in the $100,000 Laurel Dash. The winner clipped heels during the race, according to the chart, but overcame the setback to cover 5 1/2 furlongs on good turf in 1:04.41. Angel Cruz was aboard Completed Pass for trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Completed Pass is a son of Pass Rush who races for Robert D. Bone.
