ARCADIA, Calif. – Bast, a three-time Grade 1 winner last year at age 2, has been retired with a soft-tissue injury in an ankle, according to trainer Bob Baffert. “She had a spot on an ankle. It was a little inflamed. We thought it would go away,” Baffert said. “But there’s a little something going on. She’d need four months off, there’s no guarantee it would heal, and she’s going to miss the Kentucky Oaks, so we decided to retire her.” Bast, a daughter of Uncle Mo who was a $500,000 yearling purchase by Charles and Susan Chu’s Baoma Corp., won four times in six starts and earned $852,200, with Grade 1 wins in the Del Mar Debutante, Chandelier, and Los Alamitos Starlet. She won the Grade 2 Santa Ynez on Jan. 5 in her last start and had worked once since, on Jan. 18. Baffert said she leaves for Kentucky on Tuesday. Breeding plans are pending.
