ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Goodluckmate deserves some good luck for a change when he drops in class for Thursday’s sixth race at Woodbine, a $25,000 nonwinners-of-two route for older runners. A $27,000 yearling purchase in 2021 by owner/trainer Roger Attfield, Goodluckmate hasn’t come close to duplicating the success of his stakes-winning half-sister Paladin Bay. Goodluckmate finished up the track after a tardy start when debuting late in his juvenile campaign. He resurfaced eight months later on July 30, finishing a wide sixth on the inner turf, and then graduated two months later vs. Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens going the 1 1/16-mile distance of Thursday’s race. Goodluckmate tested non-winners of two Ontario-sired allowance opposition twice this fall. After racing wide over an inside-favoring track on both occasions, he finished sixth and seventh under different riders. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Leslie Chow dropped to compete at this level in his last two outings, with positive results. He ran second while leaving next-out winner Anselmo in his wake when going 1 1/8 miles on Oct. 14 and was third after mounting a four-wide rally in a fast-paced race over 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 3. Ryan Munger picks up the mount on Leslie Chow for trainer Barbara Minshall. Colonel Mustard checked in fourth behind Leslie Chow after a three-wide trip when 7-2 in the betting Nov. 3. He was previously competitive for $40,000 at the non-winners of two level and got a 74 Beyer Speed Figure three back when second in a Tapeta route. Sahin Civaci rides Colonel Mustard again for trainer Marty Drexler. They have won a meet-leading 33 races together, which included Colonel Mustard’s graduation in July. Basketball Jones was a minor player on turf during the first half of the meet. When exiting a three-month layoff on Nov. 16, the blue-blooded son of Curlin ran third in a seven-furlong Tapeta sprint in his first start for $25,000. Rafael Hernandez, who has been winning at a 33-percent clip for trainer Catherine Day Phillips, retains the mount on Basketball Jones, who wears bar shoes again. Silver Smoke and Guard of Honour could link up on the front end. Silver Smoke went too fast on a substantial lead before fading to fifth when stretching out to a route Nov. 3. The 5-year-old has since worked five-eighths in a sizzling 58.60 for trainer Richard Morden, who’s taking the blinkers off. Guard of Honour wired Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens in his penultimate race, but was never in contention most recently against non-winners of two rivals. Rounding out the field is Sir Samuel, who’s coming off a poor performance and a $25,000 reclaim by trainer Don MacRae, who lost him for $25,000 in September. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
