Carrumba was a fine racemare, carrying the iconic Phipps Stable black silks with cherry cap to victory four times, highlighted by the Grade 3 Top Flight Invitational Handicap in 2016. She only missed the board twice in 15 starts, and her seven additional graded stakes placings included, fittingly, a third in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes in 2016 at Belmont Park. Carrumba is now part of the broodmare band for this historic operation, and, in addition to her racing accomplishments for a productive family, she will now be remembered for her role in another big victory. Her son, Golden Tempo, racing as a homebred for the Phipps family and partner St. Elias Stables, stormed through the Churchill Downs stretch for the Kentucky Derby victory on Saturday night. “My great grandmother and grandfather and dad, they really invested in and cared for their great fillies,” said Ogden Phipps II, who, along with sister Daisy Phipps Pulito, now runs the stable. “That gave us an incredible base to always be continuing to grow from, and we would call them foundation mares. And I think we’ve been fortunate enough to have a bunch of them. And, obviously, Carrumba has certainly become one now, and she also gave us some great thrills as a racehorse.” Carrumba, by Bernardini and out of the El Prado mare Castanet, comes from a rich lineage. Castanet is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Dancing Forever. Also appearing under Carrumba’s first three dams are Hall of Famer Heavenly Prize, Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Dancing Spree, and Grade 1 winners Bigger Picture, Fantastic Find, Finder’s Fee, Furlough, Good Reward, Instilled Regard, Oh What a Windfall, Persistently, and The Liberal Member. A branch of this family also is responsible for unbeaten 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Before the Derby, he won the Grade 3 Lecomte and was third in both the Grade 2 Risen Star and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Carrumba has a 2-year-old Nyquist colt and a yearling filly by Liam’s Map next in her pipeline. Carrumba was barren for 2026, but she is currently in foal to Gun Runner, according to Walker Hancock, president of Claiborne Farm, where the Phipps mares have long resided. Meanwhile, Golden Tempo also became the second Kentucky Derby winner in a row produced by a daughter of stellar broodmare sire Bernardini. His late daughter Crowned was honored as the 2025 Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Broodmare of the Year after producing 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty, whose victories included the Derby and Belmont Stakes. The Broodmare of the Year award, first presented in 1946, is the oldest of the KTOB awards and considered one of the most prestigious accomplishments in Thoroughbred bloodstock. Bernardini, the 2006 Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old male, stood for Godolphin’s Darley stallion operation until his death in 2021 at age 18 after a battle with laminitis. In a relatively short time, he produced mares who are already responsible for 160 stakes winners worldwide, with two new Grade 1 winners appearing on that list over the weekend at Churchill Downs in Golden Tempo and La Troienne Stakes winner Shred the Gnar. In addition to these competitors, as well as champion and classic winner Sovereignty, top runners out of Bernardini’s daughters include Eclipse Award champion Immersive, Sovereign Award champion Gretzky the Great, Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress, Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Nysos, and U.S. Grade 1 winners Catholic Boy, Chancer McPatrick, Clairiere, Colonel Liam, Dunbar Road, Du Jour, Hunter O’Riley, La Cara, Matareya, Maxfield, Mo Town, Paris Lights, Speaker’s Corner, and Wicked Whisper. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
