Citing a lack of available runners, Golden Gate Fields has canceled racing this Friday and on May 24, the track’s racing office announced midday on Sunday. The track has lost four days of racing this spring because of insufficient entries in advance of its permanent closure on June 9. Racing was not held on April 19 or May 1 because of a lack of entries. Racing will be held next weekend on Saturday and May 19, and for a three-day weekend on May 25-27 to include Memorial Day. Currently, three-day racing weeks are scheduled for May 31-June 2 and June 7-9 on a Friday-through-Sunday basis. Entries for Saturday will be taken on Wednesday. At noon on Sunday, the track had no more than five entries in a proposed list of 19 races for Friday. Four races had four entries at that time. A similar situation occurred on April 28 in advance of the cancellation of racing on May 1. Track general manager David Duggan said in late April that Friday racing would be assessed on a “case-by-case basis” through the end of the season. After Golden Gate Fields closes on June 9, the northern circuit will continue at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton on a Friday-through-Sunday basis from June 14 through July 7 with the addition of racing on Thursday, July 4. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
