A delayed meeting between Golden Boi, the champion 2-year-old Quarter Horse colt of 2021, and Whizkey Glasses, another leading juvenile last year, may occur later this month if they perform to expectations in separate divisions of the El Primero Del Ano Derby trials at Los Alamitos on Sunday. Golden Boi and Whizkey Glasses were supposed to meet for the first time in the $1.12 million Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos last November, but the encounter failed to occur after Golden Boi suffered a bout of colitis in late October, days before the final. Sunday, there are three trials for the El Primero Del Ano Derby. The runners with the 10 fastest times advance to the $215,000 final at 400 yards on March 27. :: For the first time ever, our premium past performances are free! Get free Formulator now! Golden Boi, trained by Valentin Zamudio, has not raced since he set the fastest qualifying time for the Golden State Million Futurity in a trial on Oct. 10. Last June, Golden Boi won the Ed Burke Million Futurity, to date his only appearance in a major stakes. Whizkey Glasses won the Golden State Million and was later third in the $2.03 million Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity on Dec. 12, his most recent start. Trained by Monty Arrossa, Whizkey Glasses had a busy nine-race campaign last year that included six wins. He was fifth in the $200,000 All American Juvenile at 440 yards at Ruidoso Downs last September, the consolation to the $3 million All American Futurity. Golden Boi starts in Sunday’s 10th race, the last of the three trials. Whizkey Glasses runs in the ninth race against Dasha Good Reason, Favorite Honey, and Rocket Seventeen, who were fourth, seventh, and ninth in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. The first division is led by Watch Out, who was fifth in the Los Alamitos Two Million, and Arrosssa’s Hallelujah Nights, who was sixth in the Golden State Million.
