Kentucky Derby points will be up for grabs Friday night at Remington Park, where the undefeated Glengarry battles possible favorite Otto the Conqueror, the promising Gettysburg Address, Southern California shipper Raging Torrent, and local stakes winner Magic Grant in the $300,000 Springboard Mile. The first five finishers in the race for 2-year-olds will earn points for the 2024 Kentucky Derby on a scale of 10-5-3-2-1. The Springboard Mile will be supported by five other stakes, with purses for the races totaling $625,000. It is the penultimate card of the meet, and there is a special twilight post of 5 p.m. Central. Glengarry is coming off a victory in the Bowman Mill on Oct. 28 at Keeneland. Prior to that race, he had defeated fellow Iowa-breds by more than 13 lengths in the Iowa Cradle at Prairie Meadows. The son of Remsen winner Maximus Mischief will be moving to two turns for the Springboard. “Coming out of the Bowman, we wanted to find a mile spot,” said Doug Anderson, who trains Glengarry. “We decided this might be a good spot to see if he can go that far. He sure acts like he wants the distance in the mornings, galloping. We worked him three-quarters of a mile and he worked real good. We’re thinking he’ll handle it.” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. The drill came Dec. 2 at Oaklawn, when Glengarry went in 1:14. The Bowman Mill effort came under Luis Saez, who will be aboard Friday from post 5. Glengarry won by a half-length and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 85. “He did everything professionally that day,” Anderson said. “We found out that he doesn’t necessarily need to be in front. The first two starts, he was in front of horses, did it real easy. The other day, he relaxed.” Glengarry has since been flattered, with third-place finisher Valentine Candy coming back to win the Advent at Oaklawn and fourth-place finisher Patriot Spirit taking the Inaugural at Tampa. Otto the Conqueror also exits a key race, a first-level allowance he won by four lengths Oct. 29 at Churchill Downs. “I think he’s got some ability,” said Steve Asmussen, who is poised to win the training title at Remington. “He was flattered after he won the allowance. Honor Marie, who was second, came back and won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Just Steel, who was third, came back and won the Ed Brown.” Tyler Gaffalione has the mount from post 8. Trainer Brad Cox will send out Gettysburg Address and Fidget. Gettysburg Address was a sharp debut winner in August. In his only other start, he was fourth in the Grade 3 Street Sense at 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 29 at Churchill. “I think he needed the race,” Cox said. “He hadn’t run in close to three months, won a maiden race going short. I do think he’ll go long – second run around two turns, not having to wait three months to run. I think we’ll see better than he showed in the Street Sense.” Flavien Prat has the mount from post 3. Fidget is a two-time winner at a mile. Raging Torrent removes blinkers off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 American Pharoah on Oct. 7 at Santa Anita. Antonio Fresu has the mount from post 6 for trainer Doug O’Neill. Magic Grant won the local prep, the Clever Trevor. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
