Furyofthehuracan was no match for Tell Cartel in a division of the El Primero Del Ano Derby trials at Los Alamitos on March 8. That is not necessarily a mark against Furyofthehuracan. A 3-year-old gelding, Furyofthehuracan finished sixth in the trial, 3 3/4 lengths behind Tell Cartel, who returned to win the $210,300 El Primero Del Ano Derby last Sunday. In February, Tell Cartel won the Los Alamitos Winter Derby. Furyofthehuracan will race against an easier group of rivals in Friday’s seventh race at Los Alamitos, a $16,000 claimer at 300 yards. Secretary of Defense was beaten a nose in a $12,500 claimer at 300 yards on Feb. 23 in his most recent start.
