Favored Fulsome rallied widest to defeat Alonzo by two lengths in Tuesday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds traveling 1 1/16 miles at Parx Racing. A Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Brad Cox, Fulsome settled outside at the tail end of the field as Sir Barton Stakes winner The King Cheek blazed through fractions of 23.12 seconds and 46.75. Pace-tracking Alonzo forged to the front on the far turn as Riden With Biden and a four-wide Fulsome advanced steadily on the new leader. Alonzo gamely beat back challenges from both Riden With Biden and a resurgent The King Cheek, but Fulsome was in full flight under Florent Geroux. Fulsome streaked down the center of the track to complete the distance in 1:45.57. Alonzo finished a half-length clear of The King Cheek for second money. Riden With Biden, Fast Bob, and The Jones Boy completed the field. Fulsome paid $3.20 to win as the prohibitive favorite. The Smarty Jones was Fulsome’s second graded triumph from his last three starts and was won in a style reminiscent of his Matt Winn victory on May 29 at Churchill Downs. In the Matt Winn, Geroux also utilized an outside sweep from the back of the pack. A son of Into Mischief, Fulsome is a full brother to multiple stakes-placed Citrus Burst. He also is a half-brother to Grade 3-placed miler Mr Darcy. His dam is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winners Sightseek and Tates Creek.   The Smarty Jones is the local prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 25 at Parx. The Pennsylvania Derby is expected to feature leading 3-year-old Hot Rod Charlie. Parx Summer Sprint Butch Reid’s roller-coaster ride began last Friday when Vequist suffered yet another physical setback. This latest injury puts last year's champion juvenile filly on the sidelines indefinitely.  It's tough to keep a good barn down, however, and Beren's gate-to-wire victory in Tuesday's $100,000 Parx Summer Sprint at six furlongs helped soften the blow. A 3-year-old son of Weigelia out of millionaire Silmaril, Beren notched his fourth stakes victory for Reid and owners St Omer Farm and Christopher Felfarek. Ridden by Frankie Pennington, Beren immediately went to the lead and dropped fractions of 22.07 and 45.14 while prompted by Privet Moon. Beren extended on his primary pace pursuer and drew away in the stretch to win by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:10.19. He paid $2.80 to win. Marvalous Mike parlayed an inside-out tracking trip into a runner-up finish, 2 3/4 lengths ahead of a fatigued Privet Moon. Three Two Zone completed the field. Heart Rhythm was scratched during the warm-up. Dr B was withdrawn earlier in the day.               Beren won three consecutive stakes during a 44-day span earlier this year. He unsuccessfully tried to stretch his potent speed to 1 1/8 miles in last month’s Curlin Stakes at Saratoga. Beren prompted the pace that afternoon before tiring to finish last, 27 1/4 lengths behind Dynamic One. The first three finishers receive free nomination, entry, and starting fees to the Grade 2, $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes on Sept. 25. Reid told Daily Racing Form last week that the Gallant Bob was a major short-term goal for Beren Cathryn Sophia Lovely Ride displayed heart and determination fending off multiple challenges in the $100,000 Cathryn Sophia Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and 70 yards. A daughter of Candy Ride trained by Bret Calhoun, Lovely Ride was urged to the front by jockey Reylu Gutierrez and set splits of 23.92 and 48.75 while pushed by Office Party. Lovely Ride dispatched Office Party on the second turn, but immediately was threatened from the outside by a three-wide Bold Tactics. Lovely Ride parried that thrust, only to be set upon by the rallying Marion Francis and Leader of the Band. The latter made up strong late ground, but Lovely Ride would not be denied. The winner completed the distance in 1:42.66 while a half-length better than Leader of the Band. Marion Francis was another three-quarters of a length back in third. They were followed by Bold Tactics, Flight to Shanghai, and Office Party. Lovely Ride paid $6.20 to win as the third choice in the wagering. Vequist scratched. Lovely Ride won for the fourth time from six starts. She finished fifth in her only prior stakes appearance, last month’s Grade 3 Indiana Oaks. Her dam, Lovely Lil, captured the Grade 2 Go for Wand Handicap in 2011. A 2-year-old half-brother to Lovely Ride, American Xperiment, recently romped as an impressive debut winner at Saratoga. The Cathryn Sophia is the local prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion Stakes on Sept. 25. * The Grade 3, $200,000 Parx Dash, originally carded for Tuesday, has been postponed until Aug. 31 thanks to heavy precipitation caused by Tropical Storm Henri.
