Justwhistledixie, the dam of Mohaymen, delivered a full brother to her Kentucky Derby contender on March 29 at Clearsky Farm in Kentucky. Justwhistledixie, a daughter of Dixie Union, was a multiple Grade 2 winner and is off to a flying start as a broodmare, with three winners from her first three starters. She was already the dam of 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day before Mohaymen came along – which no doubt helped account for Mohaymen’s $2.2 million price tag at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. Mohaymen, a four-time Grade 2 winner, brought an unbeaten record into last Saturday’s Florida Derby showdown with Nyquist, where he finished fourth. However, Justwhistledixie has been plagued by poor luck in recent years. Barren to the cover of Tiznow, she didn’t produce a foal in 2014. She delivered a Street Cry foal, a full sibling to New Year’s Day, in 2015, but the youngster died. Her newly delivered Tapit colt would be her first to survive since full sibling Mohaymen arrived. The champion La Verdad, who was retired earlier this year, has been confirmed in foal to Medaglia d’Oro. “Foal watch” was continuing early this week on 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, who is due to deliver her fourth foal, by War Front, any day. As of Monday, owners Jerry and Ann Moss had been in Lexington, Ky., for more than a week to be on hand when the delivery occurs for the mare, boarded at Lane’s End.
