HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn Park has canceled racing from Saturday through Monday due to a winter storm system forecast to hit the area later this week, the track announced Wednesday. The Grade 3, $750,000 Southwest Stakes was scheduled for the Monday holiday card but will be run next Saturday, Feb. 20. The same 11-race card will also include the Grade 3, $600,000 Razorback Handicap, rescheduled from this Saturday, and the Grade 3, $250,000 Bayakoa, which was to be run on the Presidents Day card. The Dixie Belle for 3-year-old fillies was scheduled for this Saturday but will be run on Sunday, Feb. 21, along with the regularly-scheduled Downthedustyroad Stakes. “A week from Saturday and a week from Sunday will be terrific racing,” said Lou Cella, president of Oaklawn. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? Click to learn more. Champion Monomoy Girl was set to make her seasonal debut Monday in the Bayakoa, and she will go in the race next Saturday, trainer Brad Cox said Wednesday. The barn also had champion Essential Quality on deck for the Southwest, and he will target the rescheduled race, said Cox. “We will turn our attention to the following weekend with every horse that was intended on running this weekend,” said Cox. Those horses include Owendale, a top contender for the Razorback Handicap. The Razorback and Dixie Belle will be redrawn. The draw for next Saturday’s card will be this Sunday. Forecasters for the Weather Channel are calling for temperatures below freezing on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night. The forecast for Monday is for a high of 23 degrees, with a 58 percent chance of snow showers. Oaklawn had to postpone the 2010 running of the Southwest due to inclement weather. Cella on Wednesday was confident Oaklawn would be able to race the next day, and said the track is doing everything in its power to also race on Friday. “The freeze line is north of Little Rock,” Cella said. “If it gets down, we might be in trouble.” :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. Cella said the postponement of the stakes has been received favorably by the horsemen they’ve talked to that are shipping in from out-of-state. Razorback Handicap entrant Mr Freeze worked Tuesday at Gulfstream Park, while Monomoy Girl and Essential Quality are stabled at Fair Grounds. “We’ve talked to the connections and they’re excited about this because they didn’t want to come to Hot Springs with the weather we’re forecast to have,” Cella said. “We’re just going to pause seven days and bring back the quality racing that Oaklawn typically presents this time of year.” The Southwest, Bayakoa and Razorback are the first graded stakes of the meet at Oaklawn The Southwest Stakes will reward it’s top four finishers Kentucky Derby eligibility points on a scale of 10-4-2-1.
