OZONE PARK, N.Y. – As well as he trains over it in the morning, it’s hard to believe that Friend Ofthe Devil runs so poorly on the dirt. “One of the great mysteries of life,” his trainer Carlos Martin said. But the one time he ran on turf, Friend Ofthe Devil was terrific, speeding off to a 6 1/4-length victory in a maiden race for New York-breds at Aqueduct last Oct. 31. Friday, at Aqueduct, Friend Ofthe Devil returns to the turf in a first-level allowance for statebreds going six furlongs over the outer turf course. A son of Honest Mischief, Friend Ofthe Devil finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in a pair of 10-horse fields of New York-bred maidens on dirt last summer at Saratoga. Martin switched him to the turf last fall and Friend Ofthe Devil shot out to the lead and kept going, running six furlongs in 1:09.61 and dominating an 11-horse field. Perhaps the negative is horses exiting that race are a combined 1 for 19 since. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Martin tried Friend Ofthe Devil one more time on dirt last December and the horse confirmed his disdain for it – at least in the afternoon – with a sixth-place finish in a field of seven. Following a break, Friend Ofthe Devil has been in training since late February and last Saturday he blitzed a half-mile from the gate in 46.61 seconds under jockey Christopher Elliott over Belmont’s dirt training track. It was the fastest of 217 works at the distance. “I told Chris he hasn’t run in five or six months, pop him out of there and take a hold, and he just did that on his own,” Martin said. Elliott, a five-pound apprentice, is 7 for 40 at the Aqueduct spring meet – good enough for fourth in the standings – and gets the call from post 7. Friend Ofthe Devil is one of four 3-year-olds in a full field – 13 were entered for turf, 12 will run – and he gets Lasix for the first time. While Friend Ofthe Devil will likely try to wire this group, Bosun figures to come from off the pace. After going 0 for 2 on dirt here last spring, the now 4-year-old Bosun came off the bench with a solid 4 1/2-length maiden win sprinting on turf against open company last month at Fair Grounds for trainer Joe Sharp. The only horse to run back out of that race was fourth-place finisher Advanced Spirit who finished second in a dirt maiden at Oaklawn Park, improving his Beyer Speed Figure by 11 points. Bosun, who has Dylan Davis to ride and is drawn right outside of Friend Ofthe Devil, is a half-brother to a pair of turf winners. He is carrying 126 pounds, 11 more than Friend Ofthe Devil. Master Freud owns a maiden win and was beaten a head in this condition on turf last November. He returns from a two-month freshening after two credible dirt efforts from three starts for trainer Bob Klesaris. Miracle Mike, trained by Tom Morley, is a two-time winner on turf, albeit going long. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
