HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Despite winning a pair of stakes during her 2-year-old campaign at Saratoga, there will be a degree of uncertainty when The Queens M G kicks off her 3-year-old season as the likely favorite Saturday at Gulfstream in the $165,000 Forward Gal.  The Grade 3 fixture for 3-year-old fillies will be decided at seven furlongs and offers 42 qualifying points, to be awarded on a 20-10-6-4-2 basis, for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 2.     The Queens M G was a disappointment in her stakes debut at 2 in the Astoria at Saratoga. There, she finished seventh, beaten 18 lengths as a 2-1 favorite. But she bounced out of the race with two big efforts, pulling off a shocking 2 3/4-length victory at odds of 44-1 in the six-furlong Schuylerville as a stepping-stone to her nine-length triumph going 6 1/2 furlongs in the Grade 3 Adirondack.   The Queens M G attempted to sweep the stakes series for juvenile fillies at Saratoga in the Grade 1 Spinaway but could not handle the added distance, finishing a tiring and well-beaten fifth. She then closed out her up-and-down season with a distant third behind Stunner in the one-mile Tempted at Aqueduct on Nov. 2.        “Her stakes career didn’t start out so well, then it got really good,” said Saffie Joseph Jr., who trains The Queens M G for the partnership of C2 Racing Stable and Mathis Stables, who purchased the filly privately after she won her debut at Keeneland in April. “I thought she just didn’t fire in the mud in the Grade 1 [Spinaway] and then ran creditably in her last start at Aqueduct.” :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. The Queens M G enters the Forward Gal having had only three works since the Tempted, and Joseph admitted he’s not quite sure what to expect on Saturday.  “She’s a very accomplished filly,” Joseph said. “We gave her a break with this in mind. Fitness-wise, you would think she probably needs another work coming off the layoff, although she’s not a big filly. This race is to kind of see where we’re at with her at the present time.”  The Queens M G is one of two top contenders Joseph has entered in the Forward Gal. The other is Rojo Rita, who ran to her 7-5 backing when exploding to a 16 1/4-length victory in her only previous start going six furlongs here on Nov. 15.  “She’s a very talented filly, but this is not what I generally like to do, to make this jump off a maiden win,” said Joseph. “They usually need to be really good and even better than that to make that kind of jump. I would have rather come back in an allowance, but the race hasn’t filled.” The Forward Gal drew a field of 11 and also includes the Brad Cox-trained duo of Stunner and Eclatant, both of whom shorten up in distance after flattening out going two turns in their 2-year-old finales.   Stunner came out of her well-graded 3 1/2-length victory in the Tempted to finish a disappointing second as the 1-5 favorite going 1 1/16 miles in the restricted My Dear Girl Stakes here on Nov. 30. Eclatant opened her career with a pair of relatively easy victories before finishing third when trying 1 1/16 miles for the first time in the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs on November 30.  Justinqueso, who is trained by Ian Wilkes, crossed the wire second in her only previous start on Dec. 19 but was awarded the maiden win via a stewards’ disqualification. That effort earned her the highest last-out Beyer Speed Figure, an 85, of any member of the Forward Gal lineup.   “I felt like I had her a little under done going into that first race and she ran spectacular. She’s very talented,” said Wilkes. “I’m very happy the way she’s trained since. She’s been working with Burnham Square. I really didn’t want to bring her back in this spot, but we were kind of in no-man’s land if we waited for an allowance race and it did not go.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
