LAUREL, Md. – Different venue, same result for Fort Washington in the Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes.  A year after winning the Dinner Party at odds of 5-1 over “good” turf at Pimlico, Fort Washington ran by 2-5 favorite Cruise the Nile in deep stretch and held off a late run from A Bourbon for Toby to win Saturday’s $250,000 Dinner Party by three-quarters of a length over firm turf at Laurel Park.  A Bourbon for Toby, running back on just nine days’ rest, finished second by one length over Cruise the Nile, who had a four-race winning streak snapped. What Say Thee and pacesetting Harrow completed the field. Dresden Row and Thundering scratched.  This was Fort Washington’s eight career victory, fifth in a graded stakes and first since he won the Grade 1 Arlington Million last August.   Fort Washington has a tendency to lug in during his races, something trainer Shug McGaughey felt cost him in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf at Gulfstream on Feb. 28.  “He’s a pretty good horse when he runs straight,” McGaughey said by phone from New York where he watched the race. “It’s when he gets to lugging in… that’s what happened to him in the race before this, he couldn’t let him run.”  :: Get Preakness Betting Strategies for exclusive wagering insights, contender analysis, and more Saturday, in a compact field of five, Alvarado kept Fort Washington three to four wide but within two lengths of the lead. Harrow, under Tyler Gaffalione, set the pace but was tackled by Cruise the Nile and Jorge Ruiz around the far turn. Fort Washington followed that move and needed most of the stretch to get by Cruise the Nile before having to hold A Bourbon for Toby, who was last under Irad Ortiz Jr., at bay late.  “I didn’t even have to do anything really, he broke out of there and he put himself in that position,” Alvarado said. “I knew we were going a slow to decent pace, I was fine where I was, I didn’t have to be too far back. I just thought he was much the best today.”  Fort Washington, a 7-year-old son of War Front owned by Magic Cap Stable, covered the 1/8 miles in 1:47.15 and returned $7.80 to win.  McGaughey said he would likely map out a plan to get Fort Washington back to the Arlington Million on Aug. 1 at Colonial Downs.  A Bourbon for Toby was running back nine days after finishing third to the McGaughey-trained Integration in a conditioned allowance at Aqueduct. Trainer Tom Morley said he only entered in the Dinner Party when he was told by Maryland racing officials the field was coming up small. Morley said when Dresden Row was scratched that sealed the deal to run. That, and Morley said A Bourbon for Toby showed him all the right signs this week to take a shot to run.  “He told me it wasn’t going to be a problem, he’s eaten everything since his last race, trained beautifully all week,” Morley said. “We were going to leave it to the last minute and he’s rewarded us. I couldn’t be prouder of him.”  Cruise the Nile was sent off the 2-5 favorite based on him having brought a 4-for-4 record into the race. But he had never run 1 1/8 miles and jockey Jorge Ruiz and trainer Graham Motion indicated it was his undoing Saturday.  “I think it’s maybe a little far for him,” Ruiz said. “He tried. At the quarter pole, I asked him, he gave me a little run but not the same as the other races.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
